Chapter 29%
“Yvonne came to see me herself,” I said, crossing my arms. “She spilled all your dirty little secrets.”
Jonathan froze as if struck by lightning, his lips trembling as he tried to explain, “She deliberately seduced me. thought it was
I was
drunk that day and I
“Thought it was me?” I cut him off, my voice laced with sharp sarcasm. “Jonathan, you’re disgusting.”
How could I not see the resemblance between Yvonne’s eyes and mine? But aside from that, we were two completely different people.
He used that as an excuse to comfort his guilty conscience. Disgusting
He suddenly reached out and grabbed my wrist. “Daphne, let me explain
Slapl
The sound echoed down the hallway.
His face snapped to the side, a red handprint blooming across his cheek.
That slap was for my younger self”
said, shaking my numb hand. “If she had known you’d turn out like this ten years later, she would never have given you a second glance,
Jonathan slowly turned back to face me, his eyes welling with tears
He opened his mouth but couldn’t get any words out.?!
Istepped back and moved to close the door. “If you still refuse to sign the divorce, I see you in court.”
He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and suddenly let out a broken laugh. It looked more painful than crying. “Daphne, do you really hate me that much?”
“I don’t hate you,” I shook my head. “I just don’t love you anymore.”
That hit harder than anything else.
Jonathan’s breathing became rapid, his chest rising and falling violently
His eyes were bloodshot, his fingers gripping the doorframe tightly to stop me from suddenly closing the door.
The next second, he suddenly dropped to his knees before my door with a “thump.”
“I know I deserve to die…
He raised his hand and slapped himself hard. The sharp crack echoed in the hallway. “This one is for the day you had your miscarriage and I wasn’t there for you.”
I stood there frozen, stunned by his crazed behavior.
He hit himself again, this time so hard that blood trickled from his lip. “That one’s for the day I brought Wendy into our home.”
The motion–sensor light in the hallway flickered on and off with his violent movements, illuminating his distorted expression.
His palm was red and swollen, but he didn’t stop. “And this one’s for when you needed me the most and I was in someone else’s bed….”
I finally couldn’t take it anymore and interrupted him. Jonathan, do you think this pathetic display will make me change my mind?”
He looked up, tears mixed with blood streaking his face. “I’m not acting, Iwant you to know that I’m willing to repay you a thousand times over for all your pain.”
Hearing those words, I couldn’t help but remember all the grievances I had endured,
My eyes welled up and I let out a cold laugh. “Oh, really? Then, keep hitting yourself. I won’t even spare you a second glance, even if you beat yourself to death.“2
His body swayed as if my words pierced him, but he raised his hand again.
This time, his hand trembled violently in mid–air before finally dropping limply to his side.
“Daphne.” He crawled forward on his knees, reaching for the hem of my shirt. “Give me a chance to make things right. Just one chance, please.”
I took a step back, avoiding his touch. Jonathan, you’re pathetic.”
His pupils constricted sharply. I slowly closed the door in his face
Bang‘
The sound of the latch clicking shut was remarkably crisp.
