Chapter 26
He strode towards Wendy I thought he was going to help her, but he sneered condescendingly. “Are you done with your act?”
Wendy’s crying stopped abruptly &
“There are security cameras in the house,” Jonathan said, each word distinct. “Do you need me to pull up the footage right now?” Wendy’s face turned from pale to red. Her lips trembled, but she couldn’t get a word out.
The ambulance arrived quickly.
As the paramedics carried Wendy away, she was still sobbing and trying to explain, “Jonathan, I was just so scared
“Get to the hospital”
Jonathan said without even glancing at her. “If you pull any more stunts, get out of the Zanders.”
I picked up my bag, ready to leave. This whole farce had exhausted me.
I knew Jonathan still didn’t want to go to the City Hall for the divorce.
I had just reached the door when the driver stopped me. “Ms. Daphine, Mr. Dean wants to see you.”
Dean sat in a wheelchair, a light blanket over his lap. He looked even older than the last time I saw him, probably due to too many blows
He gestured for me to sit on the chair opposite him and personally poured a cup of tea, pushing it towards me.!
was premium Earl Grey tea. The rising steam carried a familiar, refreshing fragrance.S
“Daphne,” Dean’s voice was a little hoarse. “Do you remember when you first came to the Zanders?”
I picked up the teacup, feeling the warmth of the porcelain on my fingertips. “It was my sophomore year of high school. It was Jonathan’s birthday,”
“You’re right.” Dean’s gaze fell on an old photo on the bookshelf. In the photo, the two families stood together and a younger Dean, with his arm around my father’s shoulder, was smiling brightly
“Your father had just taken on that Westside project at that time. Jonathan kept mentioning it in my ear every day, insisting on inviting your whole family for dinner.”
I stared at my father’s spirited appearance in the photo, a heaviness pressing my chest!
“Your father was a loyal man.” Dean sighed. “If it weren’t for him helping the Zanders back then
“Uncle Dean,” I set the cup down. The porcelain made a crisp clink against the hardwood table. “You didn’t call me here just to reminisce, did you?”
He tapped his fingers lightly on the armrest of his wheelchair. After a moment of silence, he finally said, “Daphne, I approve of your divorce from Jonathan “2
I froze, then let out a short laugh “Uncle Dean, are you sure you’re not mistaken?”
“I know Jonathan wronged you
He said, his voice dropping.
“As for Wendy. I’ve dealt with her. Her only purpose was to have a child. She won’t appear in front of you again.”
“And what’s that got to do with me?” I stood up, unwilling to continue
They made it sound like I was the villain who forced Wendy away, but in the end, it was Jonathan who brought Wendy here and Jonathan who was now driving her away, not me.!!
Dean suddenly coughed violently, his aged hand gripping the wheelchair armrest tightly.
I instinctively stepped forward to help, but forced myself to stop
“Daphne,” he said after catching his breath, his eyes filled with a complicated look. “This divorce is the best thing for you. Jonathan doesn’t deserve you.”
That sentence finally made me laugh out loud.}
How ironic. He firmly pushed for this marriage back then and now he is the one saying, “Divorce is the best thing.”
“Uncle Dean.” I picked up my bag. My tone was polite but distant.
“You’ve got one thing wrong. It’s not that I’ve been dragging my feet on the divorce; it’s your son who has consistently refused to go through the procedures. If you can convince your son, we can finalize everything tomorrow.“X
I walked towards the door, then turned back to add, “Otherwise, 111 have to take legal action.
Pushing open the heavy wooden door of the study, I practically fled the Zander residence.!!
