Her gaze turned sharp, her voice accusing. “Because of you, Gilbert ended up like this, and you couldn’t even be bothered to come see him?” Sherilyn gave her a brief look, then turned away, leaning back on the couch and closing her eyes. She and Caroline never could have a civil conversation. Any attempt to talk inevitably led to a fight. And this was a hospital room, with Gilbert still inside, not yet out of danger…
laughed, “Sherilyn, don’t tell me you didn’t come here willingly, that you were actually kidnapped by Naylor?”
Was she being ignored? Caroline paused, then scoffed softly, “I came to see Gilbert. Why bother arguing with you?” She wheeled inside just as a nurse opened the door. After a quick look around, the nurse focused on the bodyguard, “Mr. Harrison is awake!”
The bodyguard, elated, exchanged a glance, “Got it!” One of them immediately went to make a call to inform Naylor. Caroline, pushing the wheelchair, moved forward, “I’m his girlfriend, can I see him?” Hearing she was the girlfriend, the nurse didn’t stop her, “You may… but he’s still quite weak.”
“I understand,” Caroline said impatiently, “I’ll be careful!” On the couch, Sherilyn stared blankly, looking through the glass wall…
“Gilbert!” Caroline reached the bedside. Seeing Gilbert’s pale, fragile appearance, her eyes immediately filled with tears. “How did this happen?”
“Caroline.” Gilbert’s lips moved slightly, mustering a weak smile, “I’m okay…”
“Okay?” Caroline eyed him sharply, “Of course! You promised me, you’d always be by my side! Dare to break your promise and leave me alone, just you try!” She reached out, grasping his hand. Tears overflowed as she choked up, “It was a close call… If something happened to you, I’d be all alone…”
“Mm…” Gilbert frowned slightly, his gaze searching for something.
Caroline noticed and quickly composed herself, “Looking for something?” She knew the answer but asked anyway. Without waiting for his response, Caroline slightly curved her lips, revealing the truth, “Looking for Sherilyn?”
“…” Gilbert remained silent for a moment, then nodded. “Yes. She…” “She’s right outside.”
What? Gilbert was taken aback,
mix of surprise and joy washing over him. Was Sherilyn really here? Did she come to see him? His
expression didn’t escape Caroline’s notice, and it stung her deeply.
She glanced outside, then hinted at Gilbert with a nod, “She’s outside, should I have someone bring her in?”
Hmm? Gilbert’s brow furrowed instantly, puzzled by what she meant. “Sigh…” Caroline sighed, reluctant to reveal the truth, “Just be prepared, she was brought here against her will.” What? Gilbert felt a pang in his heart, wishing he could jump up immediately, “What happened?”
“Don’t panic!” Caroline quickly steadied him, “It was Luke… your father’s doing! Sherilyn didn’t want to come herself, so, out of desperation, your father had her brought here!”
