Even though she had jumped of her own accord, Caroline couldn’t help but scream as she tumbled down. Pain flared instantly.
Then, everything went dark-she blacked out before she even hit the floor.
Caroline!
Caroline!
The two brothers thundered down the stairs, faces drawn and stormy with disbelief.
Francis dropped to one knee, reaching out to lift Caroline. But Gilbert shot him a look and shook his head. Let me, bro.
Francis hesitated, knowing his leg still acted up sometimes after the car accident. He stepped aside, grateful for his brother’s help.
Gilbert scooped Caroline up without another word.
Sawyer! Francis barked, not wasting a second. Start the car! Call the hospital- tell them to get ready for us!
Yes, Mr. Francis!
ER, later that night.
The doors to the emergency room swung open. A doctor stepped out, peeling off his mask.
Both brothers rushed over. Doctor, how is she?
Mr. Johnson, Mr. Harrison, the doctor nodded. You can relax. Ms. Bennett only suffered a few scrapes and bruises. Nothing serious.
He glanced at his clipboard. It helped that she fell from the second floor-wasn’t too high. Plus, she landed in a way that lessened the impact.
She’s been taken back to her room, he added. But she’s still unconscious.
Why? The brothers’ relief evaporated in an instant. You just said she’s okay!
The doctor’s eyes softened. All the tests look good. Sometimes, though… medicine can’t explain everything. Just wait and see. She might wake up soon.
That was all they could do for now.
Thank you, Doctor.
The brothers made their way to Caroline’s room. She lay sleeping

Francis settled into the chair at her bedside. Gilbert hovered nearby, glancing at his watch.
It was nearly six.
Francis caught the look and lowered his voice. You should go. Sherilyn and Jenna are waiting at home.
He was right. Gilbert had promised them he’d be home for dinner tonight.
Gilbert hesitated. But-
No buts, Francis said with a rueful
shake of his head. I appreciate in el

me.
He waved him off. Go on.
Gilbert set his jaw and nodded. Alright. I’ll head out. But if you need anything, call me, okay?
Francis just nodded, grateful.
Gilbert slipped out the door.
When he got back to Blue Haven, the sun hadn’t quite set. Inside the South Wing, Sherilyn and Jenna were just coming down the stairs.
Mommy, Daddy’s home! Jenna squealed, wriggling free and tearing across the foyer.
Daddy!
Gilbert grinned and knelt, catching his daughter in a big hug.
Jenna wrapped her arms around his neck and planted an exaggerated kiss on his cheek. Daddy keeps his promises! That’s your reward from Jenna!
Gilbert laughed, eyes crinkling. Thank you, sweetheart.
Then he looked at Sherilyn, mischief in his eyes, and tapped his other cheek.
What about Mommy? Isn’t there a reward for me here, too?
He was openly angling for a kiss-no shame about it.
