Sherilyn lay on the bed with her eyes closed, not bothering to even lift an eyelid.
The mattress dipped beside her as Gilbert sat down.
Sherilyn, he called softly, resting a hand on her shoulder. He gave her a gentle nudge. Come on, get up and eat something, okay?
Sherilyn remained silent, ignoring him entirely.
Please, Gilbert coaxed her in a gentle voice. You need to eat so you can take your medicine.
He was being annoyingly persistent.
I’m not hungry, Sherilyn muttered, keeping her eyes shut and shaking her head.
That’s not good, Gilbert frowned slightly, trying to help her sit up. Are you feeling weak? Do you want me to help you?
I said I’m not hungry! Sherilyn snapped, suddenly opening her eyes and pushing him away with irritation. I don’t want to eat or take any meds! I just want to sleep, okay? Let me sleep!
She turned away from him, pulling the comforter over her head.
Just leave, and don’t forget to close the door, she added, her voice muffled by the blanket.
Despite her outburst, Gilbert didn’t seem upset, only resigned. Sherilyn heard him stand up and walk toward the door.
Finally, some peace, she thought, breathing a sigh of relief as she peeked out from under the covers. His intrusion had scattered her sleepiness, and she’d have to try to coax it back again.
But her respite was short-lived. Not long after, the door creaked open again, and Gilbert was back!
What on earth was he doing?
Sherilyn clamped her eyes shut, refusing to pay him any attention.
Gilbert returned with a tray in his hands, setting it down on the bedside table before sitting back on the edge of the bed.
Come on, have a bite, he urged gently, looking at her back. I know you’re not really asleep…
With that, he leaned down, attempting to lift her.
Gilbert! Sherilyn exclaimed, her eyes flying open in surprise. She glared at him, Why are you being so annoying? Can’t you just leave me alone?
No, I can’t, Gilbert replied, holding her close. I won’t leave you alone anymore.
Sherilyn felt a sudden sting in her eyes.
Knock, knock, knock!
The door suddenly echoed with a series of knocks.
Both of them looked up.
Outside, a small voice called out, Is Mommy up yet?
Sherilyn and Gilbert exchanged a glance.
Go on, Sherilyn urged him. Don’t let Jenna come in!
Alright, he agreed, understanding her concern.
Gilbert released her and went over to the door, opening it. Morning, Jenna.
Morning, Daddy, Jenna chirped,
standing on her tiptoes and peering
inside, clearly eager to go in. Is

Mommy!
You can’t, sweetie, Gilbert said, scooping Jenna up in his arms to gently block
her path.
But why? Jenna asked, her big eyes blinking with disappointment. I miss Mommy. I want to be with her.
Mommy’s not feeling well, Gilbert explained patiently.
Since Jenna had recently undergone surgery and was still in a fragile
state, even a minor cold could undo all the progress they’d made
QUMS
Remember what Mommy said? Jenna needs to stay healthy, right?
Yeah, Jenna nodded, recalling her mother’s words.
That’s my girl, Gilbert said, planting a kiss on her messy, uncombed hair.
So be a good girl and wait until Mommy feels better, then you can be with her, okay?
Okay… Jenna agreed, though her lower lip trembled. Is Mommy really sick?
Gilbert shook his head reassuringly Mommy just has a little cold.
