Gilbert stood silently by the balcony door, watching Sherilyn with a heavy heart.
He hadn’t really fallen asleep. The moment Sherilyn had gotten up, he had woken too.
He watched her make her way to the balcony, curling up on the lounge chair like a small, forlorn figure.
His heart ached. He couldn’t bear to look, so he closed his eyes, turning his gaze away.
In that moment, he wished more than anything that there was a way to turn back time. He wanted to go back five years.
He wanted to tell his past self, Make sure to cherish Sherilyn, because someday, she’ll become the most important part of your life.
But that was just wishful thinking. The man he had been five years ago could never have imagined the depth of the pain he would feel now.
Regret gnawed at him.
Time ticked by.
Sherilyn fell asleep, her head lolling to one side, nearly tumbling off the chair.
Gilbert rushed forward just in time to catch her.
He bent down, carefully scooping her up and carrying her into the bedroom. Gently, he laid her down on the bed.
He leaned over, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.
…
The next morning, Gilbert woke up to find Sherilyn nestled comfortably in his arms.
He carefully moved away from her and slipped out of bed.
Sherilyn had stayed up late the previous night, and now she finally had the chance to catch up on sleep since she didn’t have to be on set for the next few days.
As he emerged from the bathroom, he was startled by the sound of Sherilyn sneezing repeatedly from the bed.
Achoo! Achoo! Achoo…
Gilbert frowned and went over to her. Are you feeling okay?
He sat down on the edge of the bed and touched her forehead. It wasn’t too hot, which was a relief.
He opened the bedside drawer and took out a thermometer to check her temperature.
I’m fine… Sherilyn waved him off.
The thermometer showed no fever.
Gilbert was somewhat reassured, but seeing her looking so drained and sniffting, he suspected she might have caught a chill from sitting on the balcony the previous night.
Despite it being summer, the nights in Blue Haven could still be quite cool, thanks
to the lush greenery.
Just stay in bed.
He tucked the blanket around her and placed the tissue box within her reach.
I’m going to find some medicine.
He left to get the medicine, but as he
read the instructions, he whee
You can’t take this on an empty` stomach. You need to eat
something first.
He looked at Sherilyn. What do you want for breakfast?
Doesn’t matter, Sherilyn replied, a
bit
It’s not going to kill me. Cel.net ned, reaching for the . I can just take it likel
Hey.
Gilbert gently held her hand, exasperated. What kind of talk is that?
What? Sherilyn snapped, her patience wearing thin. I’m just glad to have medicine. Empty stomach or not, it’s fine.
Gilbert paused, staring at her.
Did you… not have medicine when you were sick in Crestwood?
Sherilyn froze.
She had spoken without thinking, and now she regretted it.
With a small, wry smile, she said, Crestwood isn’t like Sunhaven. Doctors there don’t prescribe medicine easily…
This wasn’t necessarily about money.
But Gilbert couldn’t shake the sour feeling in his chest.
He put the medicine away. Just rest for now. We’ll hold off on the medicine.
With that, he got up and left the room.
Sherilyn was puzzled, but she felt too unwell to dwell on it. She turned over and drifted back to sleep.
Sometime later, still half-asleep, she heard the door open again.
Gilbert had returned.
