When Despair Comes

Chapter 248
How time flew. It had been three years.
I never thought I would see Antonio again.
The project Edwin and I studied was a great success. I was given a brand- new identity. When I accepted the award on the stage, I saw Antonio sitting among the crowd.
The world was too small. Despite my efforts, we met again. Antonio had changed a lot.
The past three years seemed to be a blizzard in his eyes, covering Antonio with an icy aura. No longer the successful businessman, Antonio now looked sad with a permanent crease between his brows.
“Aren’t you going to say hi? It’s said that in the past three years, he kept looking for you like a madman and has traveled across the world. Even I’m moved by his persistence.”
I picked up on Edwin’s sarcastic tone and chuckled too. “What’s the point?” i
For people like Antonio, the most valuable things in the world were things they couldn’t obtain and things they had lost.

Antonio was a man that had everything normal people wanted. In his mind, he could get everything effortlessly, so he would never learn to cherish things that he already had.
“Alright. No need to waste your energy on people who aren’t worth it.
Because of your excellent performance in this study, I’ve filed a promotion
report for you. I believe your career is looking bright.”
Edwin wanted me to receive the award along with him. But I was used to being low–key. Also, I didn’t want Antonio to see me. So, I turned down Edwin’s kind offer and stood on the side to applause for him.
However, Antonio saw me nonetheless,
When I was leaving, he passed through the crowd and stopped me. “Grace.”
I turned down calmly and looked at Antonio, my gaze cold. “Sir, you have the wrong person.”
my Grace.
“No. I won’t mistake you for anyone. You’re m
“Grace, I’m sorry. Please come home with me. I promise you that I’ll never make you sad again.” Men always made promises so easily.
Antonio had promised that there would never be lies or betrayal in our marriage.

He promised that our love would be like a star, unique and eternal. But he had failed to keep any of his promises.
I knew things didn’t end well for Corine. Antonio had suffered too. But they had it coming. It had nothing to do with me.
I already started a new life, a life that had nothing to me with Antonio and our past. I took a few steps back, distancing myself from Antonio.
I looked at him and scoffed.
“Sir, it seems that you like to make promises. Too bad that you’ve mistaken.” Noticing the doubt in Antonio’s face, I took out my ID and showed it to him.
Chapter 245
“No, I’m not looking at that. You can’t fool me. You’re my Grace. I’ll always recognize you.
“Grace, please forgive me. You have no idea how miserable I am without you. Every night, I dream of you. But when I wake up, I’m alone.
“I don’t want to experience that pain again.”
Antonio grabbed my hand stubbornly as if he was worried that I’d disappear without a sound again.
Edwin noticed our confrontation and came over to help me out. Although he was smiling, he sent Antonio a serious warning.
“My student is an outstanding contributor to the nation and the society. She’s not your kept woman. If you disrespect her, even your family can’t help you.”
The three years had formed a huge gap between me and Antonio. It didn’t matter that he recognized me.
It didn’t matter that he was reluctant to back down. There was nothing he could do.
“Grace. Why? Why are you doing this to me? I–I’d rather you say you hate
me.”
I didn’t have time to hear Antonio’s nonsense or dwell on our past. So I shook off his hand and left with Edwin.
Antonio tried to chase after me but was stopped by the guards. I watched him collapse to the floor, tears streaming down his face.
The proud young man who loved me more than anything had died at that moment. He finally paid the price for breaking his promise.
Chapter 248
Since then, Antonio’s life had become an empty shell, and I’d head toward
my bright future by myself.
