When Childhood Bonds Stir Trouble

02
Hearing those words, I was furious. I raised my hand and slapped Calvin twice. His face
swelled up instantly, and he glared at me.
“Go on, keep shouting! If you do, I’ll call everyone in the housing compound over and let them
hear exactly what’s going on between you and that woman!”
Calvin roared back, “Rebekah, have you lost your mind?”
“Yes, I have! I want everyone to see the truth. You and Jennie are sneaking around, and now
you have the nerve to accuse me? Come on, everyone, come take a look!”
Seeing me about to make a scene, he rushed over, trying to cover my mouth. I slapped his

hand away. “Calvin, I’m done with you! If either of us backs out of the divorce today, they’ll be the biggest coward alive!
Don’t even think about blaming your mess on me! Jonathan and I are completely innocent!
Just because you have filthy thoughts doesn’t mean you can pin them on me!
When you’re not home, he’s the one fetching water and cooking for me. I don’t have a single
cent to my name; he’s the one who gave me money. Now tell me, as my husband, what have you done?”
Calvin’s lips trembled. “I… my salary is limited. Can’t you just be more frugal?”
“Frugal? No amount of frugality can make up for you spending all our money on that
woman!” I shot back.
“Your own brother’s family is struggling to put food on the table, yet you’re out here buying clothes for Jennie! She gets to dress up nicely while I live like a beggar. You don’t care about me, and you don’t even care about your own parents!
As a husband, you’re unfaithful. As a son, you’re unfilial. I refuse to live with someone like you any longer!”
With that, I grabbed his arm. “We’re getting divorced today!”
“If you refuse, I swear I’ll tell everyone in the compound about all the shady things you’ve done! Let’s see how Jennie dares to show her face then!”
Calvin had been stubborn about not divorcing, but hearing that, he panicked.
“You wouldn’t dare!” he threatened.
I lifted my chin. “Watch me!”
“Fine! Divorce it is!”

I turned to Jonathan. “Wait for me at home. I mean it.”
Jonathan’s face turned red in an instant. I grabbed Calvin and dragged him away.
That evening, Calvin’s superior, Wiley Myers, had just finished dinner when he heard we were divorcing. He was stunned.
“Ridiculous!” he scolded.
I took a deep breath. “This isn’t nonsense. I’m serious about the divorce. Look at my leg, he pushed me. And look at his face, I slapped him.”

Seeing the mess we had made of ourselves, Wiley’s wife pulled me aside. “Is this because of
Jennie?”
I nodded, eyes welling with tears. “We have no money left, and yet he spent everything on Jennie’s clothes! He even said she’s too delicate to wear old ones. I can’t take it anymore!
I’ve been married to him for so long, and yet he treats me like I’m invisible, as if I were a
widow!”
I clung to her and poured my heart out, telling her everything Calvin had done to me.
Calvin tried to defend himself. “She needed help,”
“So you just abandoned your own household? Look at what she’s wearing, then look at me!
Look at how she lives, then look at me!”
Tears streamed down my face. “Do you have any idea what kind of life I’m living? To be honest, I haven’t even had dinner. There isn’t a single cent left in our house.
Calvin, you’ve had your fill, but have you ever thought about how I survive at home?”
