Chapter 16 A Narrow Escape with An Old Foe
Mr Stafford, there’s a phone call for you. I quickly stepped forward with a businesslike demeanor ar promptly pushed aside the girl in the pink princess dress.
In fact, there was no phone call had set a fake alarm on my phone, and as I handed it to Evan, I was betting that he
wouldn’t expose my little trick.
Thankfully, Evan played along. He gave me a meaningful look before taking the phone and walking away. All he needed to do was tap the screen, and he would see the pre–typed message
had written.
“Don’t let her cling to your arm, and definitely don’t get too
close to her, or I’ll be very, very upset.”
Sometimes, a single look was enough to tell whether someone was a friend or a foe.
The girl in the pink princess dress immediately shot me a
hostile glare the moment our eyes met.
She seemed to be a few years younger than she was in my past life. Painful memories flooded my mind as soon as I saw
her.
It took me a moment to recognize her. She was Annie Lloyd, Samuel’s mistress from a few years later. No wonder her voice and silhouette felt familiar just now.
In my previous life, after I married Samuel, all the women he
brought home bore some resemblance to Madison, who had died tragically. Annie, being Madison’s cousin, naturally resembled her the most.
In her quest to become his official wife, Annie had falsely accused me numerous times back then. She even switched out my medication to worsen my depression and bribed the housekeeper to drug my food, framing me for infidelity.
Hmph, talk about a narrow escape with an old foe. In this life, my encounter with Annie came four or five years earlier than before, and now, she was after Evan.
Round and round we went, and here we were, rivals once again. Who else should I go after but her?
Before I could speak, Annie cut in.
“Hello, I’m Annie Lloyd, Evan’s junior from school. He’s pre- ordered a 5G visual medical machine here, and if all goes well, I’ll be heading to Juville as an assistant engineer next month. I’ll be seeing him pretty often, and I hope I can count on you to
take care of me.”
Her posture was haughty, and her gaze was filled with disdain. The way she slipped off her bracelet and handed it to me was like a noble queen rewarding a lowly maid next to the emperor -full of contempt and condescension.
I glanced at it. I thought it would be something valuable, but it turned out to be the most basic model from DK. How did she
have the nerve to show this off?
I calmly unbuttoned my sleeve to reveal the exquisite emerald bracelet on my wrist.
The bracelet was my grandmother’s wedding gift. Under the light, it gleamed with a rich, oily luster. Its crystalline
translucence seemed to contain a green dragon swimming inside. Even someone who knew nothing about emeralds could tell it was priceless.
Hmph. I was silently telling Annie that I didn’t need her cheap trinkets.
When she saw my bracelet, Annie’s expression changed slightly.
However, I just smiled gently. “Nice to meet you, Ms. Lloyd. I’m Julia Sinclair.”
As for my position at Stafford Group or my relationship with Evan, I didn’t say a word. If she wanted to know, she could find.
out for herself.
Did she think being a junior would gain her some special privileges? Did she think she could spend time with Evan just because of that? And she wanted me to take care of her? How
bold.
For the rest of the tour, besides translating, I kept a close watch on Annie. Whenever she got close to Evan, I immediately.
walked over.
Once, twice… By the fifth time, Annie angrily dragged me aside.
“Listen, you’re just Evan’s translator. How dare a lowly employee interfere in the boss‘ personal affairs? Believe me, with just one word, I can have Evan fire you immediately.”
“Sure then. Go ahead. Tell him to fire me right now!”
“You…” Annie was infuriated. She didn’t expect me not to be afraid of losing my job.
I crossed my arms. My cold stare seemed to say, “Go on then, why haven’t you done it yet?”
