“I’ve never heard him say he regained his memory. I asked him just a few days ago; he said he hadn’t.” Yvette murmured, speaking to Jeremiah as much as to herself.
Since she was pregnant, she couldn’t afford to let her emotions get the best of her. She took deep breaths to calm herself.
“It’s fine; I’ve just been deceived again. That’s all.” Yvette repeatedly reassured herself in her mind. “It’s okay. Don’t be angry. Don’t be sad. It’s okay. This might be better. This way, I can completely free myself from him.” When Jeremiah noticed her reaction, he reached out to hold her hand. “It’s okay. You have me.”
Yvette was startled. She looked at the hand Jeremiah was holding, but at that moment, she pulled away. Xavier had made mistakes; she couldn’t be wrong as well.
“Jeremiah, you’re Zoey’s fiancé.” She reminded him.
Jeremiah’s free hand tensed, and a flicker of discomfort crossed his face.
He then said gently, “You misunderstood me. I meant that I’ll stand by your side. After all, we’re still friends, aren’t we? Don’t worry. If Xav’s done something wrong, I won’t side with him.”
Yvette felt reassured by his words. She glanced at the time displayed on the screen in the car; it was already past 1:00 am.
“Let’s go back,” she suggested.
“Okay.”
Jeremiah drove Yvette home. Along the way, he glanced at her occasionally, gripping the steering wheel tightly. No matter what it took, he was determined to win her back.
“Don’t blame me for this, Xav,” he thought. “You’re the one who insisted on taking what’s mine.”
Back at Dewberry Manor, Yvette got out of the car before she thanked Jeremiah.
“I’ll keep the car for now and return it to you tomorrow.”
“Alright.” Yvette nodded and went into the manor alone. Once inside, she called Mark, “Mr. Xyrax, there’s no need to search anymore.”
Mark was wondering why when Yvette informed him, “Xavier and Daphne went to a hotel together.”
“That’s impossible! Mrs. Lane, Mr. Lane wouldn’t be with Daphne,” Mark blurted out.
He was certain because, as an outsider and someone close to Xavier, it was the first time he’d seen Xavier actrecklessly for a woman, and there was also the fact that Xavier was pretending to have lost his memories just so he could stay with Yvette.
“Xavier has regained his memory, hasn’t he?” Yvette asked again.
Mark came to a pause again. Thinking she was just making a guess, he tried to cover for Xavier. “No. Who told you that, Mrs. Lane?”
Yvette knew he wouldn’t reveal the truth. “Forget it.” She sighed.
“Forget it” didn’t mean she had let it go. Mark, who had been in a relationship for a year or two, knew that a woman, especially a pregnant one like Yvette, often hadn’t truly let it go despite her words. Pregnant women had different levels of hormones and were more prone to anger and frustration.
“Mrs. Lane, let me explain. Mr. Lane did regain his memory, but he pretended to have amnesia because he feared you would leave him.

Mark thought Yvette must have already known about the pretense of poverty, so he decided to explain everything. He believed that honesty was more important than anything else, which was what his fiancée had advised him.
But before he could finish, Yvette hung up the phone.
Mark helplessly looked at the disconnected call. “Who told Mrs. Lane? How did she know Mr. Lane was with Daphne?”
He immediately instructed his subordinates to look into the guests at the party and found Daphne. Now that he had a lead, he started tracking Daphne’s movements after she’d left the party.

When Yvette arrived home, Noah was still awake. “Mom, did you find Mr. Xavier?”
“Yes, he will be back tomorrow.”
“What is Mr. Xavier doing? He’s not answering his phone. He’s never stayed out overnight before,” Noah added.
Those words instantly reminded Yvette of something.
