It took me three days to wrap my head around this whole reborn thing.
Three days ago, Alaric had stormed into my house, basically demanding I marry him. More like a threat than a proposal.
My childhood buddy flipped out when he heard it.
“Get the hell out of here,” he said. “Lay low in another country until this whole mess blows over.
That’s what I did last time around.
But this time? The memories of those walls plastered with photos, the nightmare of blood staining the floorboards… they made me pause.
“No,” I said firmly. “I’m staying.”
“I want to know why he’s so desperate to marry me.”
Alaric’s empire was thriving.
When I arrived at his building, his secretary personally escorted me to his office, informing me he was wrapping up a meeting.
“Mr. Garcia will be with you shortly,” he said with practiced politeness.

True to his word, Alaric appeared minutes later, his long strides purposeful as he adjusted his designer cufflinks.
He stopped when he saw me, his face instantly becoming an emotionless mask. “Ms. Rodriguez.”
The arctic chill in his voice left me stunned. Here was the
man who supposedly wanted to marry me, acting like I was a complete stranger.
“Mr. Garcia,” I finally gathered my courage. “My father says you want to marry me. Why?”
His reply was pure ice. “If I want to marry someone, I will. No reason needed.”
What an arrogant peacock…
“I’ll see myself out then,” I muttered, grabbing my purse.
For the first time, Alaric’s perfect composure cracked. “Leaving already?”
I caught his expression – the flash of panic, the way his face. drained of color, the self–loathing that flickered in his eyes.
Yet he still stepped aside, ready to let me walk away.
God, if I wasn’t absolutely certain this impossible man had

feelings for me, I’d think he was playing some cruel game…
With a sigh, I reached for his sleeve. “How about dinner together?”
The tension between Alaric and me had his poor assistant sweating bullets.

When I headed out, he kept tripping over himself. “Ms. Rodriguez, Mr. Garcia just doesn’t get along with girls. Please, don’t be mad.”
“Oh, I’m not mad.”
I flashed a smile. “Actually, I’m a bit into him… exactly my type of eye candy.”
The office door was cracked.
Through the gap, I caught Alaric touching his face, looking like he’d been hit by a truck.
I smirked and continued, “Got dinner plans with your boss. tonight. Make sure he doesn’t ghost me.”
The guy nodded like a bobblehead, probably scared I’d change my mind.
I clicked my way out in my Louboutins.
The second I hit the street, Marvin’s name lit up my phone.. Marvin was the childhood friend I’d mentioned.

I killed the call without blinking, tilted my head back to the sky, and let my mind drift.
Marvin treated me quite well. He’d always been the one who truly cared about me.
But whether it was a childhood bestie or just some normal friend everything just faded with time.
Just like the past life.
He got himself a wife, started a family, and suddenly I wasn’t worth his time anymore.
When I got stranded in those mountains with the exploration team, I called him desperate for help. His wife picked up – ripped into me about being some sad, lonely spinster.
And Marvin? He was right there. I could hear him breathing. But he didn’t say a damn word.
I died up there in those mountains. Never did find out if he even gave a shit when he heard the news.
