Chapter 29 A Price on Her Head
Quinn let out a cold laugh. “The compensation was already paid.”

see a single cent!”
So his family split the money unfairly and now he was blaming her? After three whole years, this was when he chose to show up and try to shake her down?
Quinn narrowed her eyes. “If you’re unhappy with how your family divided the money, what’s that got to do with me? If the payout didn’t work for you, you should’ve said something back then.” She tipped her chin. “You’ve got a problem with the settlement? Take it up with the Fairchild family”
Shane clearly wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, and her words instantly set him off. “You think I didn’t try? I couldn’t even get through the damn front gate. But you–you’re the one who killed my dad!”
He swept his gaze around the office and sneered. “And now you’re starting your own company? Sponsoring a guy like me wouldn’t even scratch the surface of your bank account.”
He might’ve been a little rough around the edges, but he wasn’t stupid. He clearly knew about her break from the Fairchilds and figured she was an easy target. If he got the money, great. If not, at least he wouldn’t be crossing any lines with the
Fairchilds.
But Quinn wasn’t about to give him a dime.
She knew people like him didn’t listen to reason. The crowd outside the office was growing, and she stayed calm as ever.
“Mr. Shane, right? Since you claim to be the victim’s family, I’ll need to see proof. Otherwise, how do I know you’re not just some con artist trying to stir up trouble? You could be facing legal charges for impersonation.”
That gave him pause. He scratched his head, digging around in his pockets. “Fine. I’ll go get the paperwork.”
He made a move toward the exit.
Quinn reached out and stopped him, speaking gently. “Leaving just like that? Aren’t you worried I’ll be gone when you get
back
He blinked. “You’ve got a point. So what now?”
“Simple. Once you’ve got your documents, wait for me at the restaurant across the street. This is a place of business–people are trying to work here”
Shane squinted at her suspiciously. “You better not be playing me. If I come back and you’re gone, I swear I’ll make your life
hell.”
“You just said it yourself–I’m starting a company. You really think I’d throw all that away for a few grand?”
That seemed to convince him. He turned and jogged off.
One of the candidates waiting nearby couldn’t hold back any longer and stepped forward. “Ms. Fairchild, I hope you mind me saying this.. but that guy was clearly trying to scam you. Why were you so polite with him?”
Quinn calmly returned to her seat and offered a polite smile, as if nothing had happened.
“Let’s continue with the interviews.”

Those with a bit of brain quickly understood what she’d done. Playing along was the fastest way to get him out of the building without a scene. Had she refused outright, he’d have made a huge spectacle–and for a startup, that kind of drama was a PR
