One Year Later
“I got a ten–dollar tip!” 1 flashed the brand–new dollar in front of Emery’s face.
She frowned.
“What table did you wait for?”
“New guys. I hope they come back.
Emery placed her chin in her hand and exhaled. Her dark pigtails dangled on either side of her face in shiny coils.
“Lucky you. All I got was a coupon for doughnuts from Mr. Olsen.”
“At least we made rent before the month ends!” I beamed.
“Yeah, so a little treat tonight won’t hurt.”
I nibbled on my bottom lip. The full moon was tonight and for the past four months when the moon came around I got sick. I got churning pains and jabs coming from my stomach. My doctor visits proved pointless they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me.
It had been going on for four months which told me it wasn’t going to stop until something happened. When I called my Dad three weeks ago he told me to be ready for what this full moon had to offer.

Emery and I found freedom and a home in a human town. Emery’s parents still called and demanded her to move back home but she didn’t want to be anyone’s slave. Anya hadn’t tried to contact me and neither had I.
I hadn’t heard from Kade since the night we separated. I rubbed the side of my neck. Where my mate mark used to be. When I closed my eyes at night I could still see Aiden Sander’s victorious smirk. He managed to rid his son of the disgraceful wolf–less girl.
Because of Kade’s rejection I hadn’t been able to go out with anyone. I didn’t feel good enough. Though, with humans, pack rank didn’t exist I wasn’t ready to put myself out there yet.
“I’m going on my break,” Emery said as she walked into the kitchen of the diner.
I had a few customers in the diner lingering in the comers after lunch so I busied myself with wiping the counter when the bell above the door chimed. I stuffed the clothe under the counter and pulled out my best smile.
When I looked up my smile drooped.

He palmed the counter, leaning on it. A dark full beard covered his face and he had scars on his arms. His features had hardened over time if I didn’t know him like the back of my hand I would have doubted it was him.
“Hello, stranger.” The corner of his mouth lifted.
Regret crushed me. I never said goodbye but he didn’t know that I had no choice.
He walked in alone but as an Alpha heir I knew his betas were close by.
“What are you doing here? This is…” I looked around but all the customers were occupied.
“A human pack. What are you doing here?” He demanded. “You just vanished.”
Now would be a good time for my break. After ditching my apron, I took Alex’s hand and led him away from the diner. Emery and I shared an apartment ten minutes from here.
“Alex, why are you here?” I asked.
He chuckled sinisterly. “You’re kidding. I’ve been looking for you. You left without saying goodbye. Kade wouldn’t say anything and your friend was gone too. How could you do that?”
I couldn’t stand the disappointment on his face so I didn’t meet his eyes.
“I had no choice. Kade rejected me.”
“Excuse me?”
I turned into an alley Emery and I used to get to the stairs that took us home.
“You live here?” Alex frowned.
“It’s no five–star but it works,” I scoffed.
“Why didn’t you go back to Henry pack?”
We walked up the rickety metal stairs. “There was nothing left for me. Besides, a Hunter in a shifter community?”
I unlocked the door and sweet scent of lavender welcomed us. Alex scanned the living room. It had one bathroom and two bedrooms. We managed quite well here.
“You know I thought something happened to you.” Rage still dripped from his tone.
“My mate rejected me that’s as bad as it can get but I’m fine….
Alex joined me on the couch. I wanted to reach out and touch his face. For the last year I thought about what he was doing and how he was.
