The morning light of Vale City pierced through the glass curtain walls, illuminating the conference room of Layton Group’s headquarters. The spacious room was filled with impeccably dressed attendees, each wearing a mask of professional indifference. Seated at the head of the table, Gavin flipped through the project documents in his hands, though a faint trace of impatience lingered between his brows.
His gaze occasionally drifted toward the window, but his mind kept replaying the scene from last night–Adeline risking her life to save Michelle. Gavin gripped his pen tightly, his knuckles turning white. He tried to banish the memory from his mind, yet the more he resisted the clearer it became. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes for a brief moment. When he opened them again, his gaze had returned to its usual cold sternness
“Mr. Gavin?” A representative from the project company cautiously spoke, pulling him back to reality.
“Continue.” His tone was flat yet carried an undeniable authority.
The representative, a middle–aged man in a tailored suit, maintained a polite smile, though a hint of condescension lurked
beneath it
“Our proposal not only ensures cost control but also meets all the technical requirements of your company. Of course, many young people these days like to be innovative, but I firmly believe that a steady and secure approach is the key to success.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the attendees began murmuring among themselves, some sneaking glances at Gavin However, the true tension arose when he added, “After all, some people reach high positions at a young age–it’s truly enviable! But having ability isn’t enough, one must also know how to build relationships, wouldn’t you agree. Mr. Gavin?”
The moment the words fell, silence swept through the room. All eyes turned to Gavin. Some struggled to hide their awkwardness, while others watched with schadenfreude.
Gavin slowly lifted his gaze, his deep, icy eyes locking onto the speaker. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he placed his pen on the table and began tapping his fingers rhythmically against the surface, each tap echoing like a heartbeat, tightening the air in the room.
“You think everyone can be like my sister–hiding behind someone?” His voice was low, yet as sharp as a blade slicing through the silence. Relying on family ties to climb the ranks?”
His words exploded like a bomb. The representative’s smile stiffened, his mouth opening as if to speak, yet no words came
out.
The atmosphere in the conference room became unbearably tense. Some attendees exchanged glances, unsure of how to handle the situation. A few attempted to mediate, but before they could speak, a more provocative voice cut through the air.
“Is Mr. Gavin getting defensive?” The project manager of the company suddenly spoke. Short and stout, with slicked–back hair and an air of arrogance, he adjusted his glasses and smirked. “We didn’t say anything offensive. Why the overreaction? Unless.. we hit a nerve?”
This remark ignited the fury Cavin had been suppressing. He shot to his feet, flipping the conference table over with a loud crash! Documents, teacups, and laptops scattered across the floor. Casps filled the room, and some attendees instinctively recoiled in fear
“You people!” Gavin roared, his eyes burning red with rage. “Hiding behind workplace formalities to bully others just because of your so–called seniority? Do you really think I’m someone you can push around?!”
His fury was an unstoppable flood. He lunged at the project manager, delivering a powerful punch that sent the man crashing to the ground. Several executives attempted to hold Gavin back, but he shook them off effortlessly, striking down two more who dared to intervene.
Security guards rushed in, but even they hesitated before his unrestrained wrath.

But Gavin wasn’t ready to stop. He broke free from Brian’s grasp, pointing at the men sprawled on the floor, his voice hoarse with rage. “Even if my father were here, he can’t stop me from teaching you hypocrites a lesson!”
Brian frowned, signaling the security team to escort the injured away before gripping Gavin’s shoulder tightly. “Enough! If this continues, there will be no turning back!”
His words finally broke through. Gavin stood frozen, surveying the wreckage around him. He looked down at his bloodstained hands, his deep, cold eyes clouding with something indescribable–guilt, remorse, pain. All blending into an abyss of despair.
“L” He murmured, unable to form a coherent thought. Then, as if all strength had drained from him, he collapsed onto the floor, covering his face with his hands. The sight of his utter collapse left everyone in the room shaken.
Adeline… Her name surfaced from the depths of his memory like a blade piercing his heart. Three years ago, she had gone to prison to protect the Layton family, shouldering a crime that was never hers to bear And II, the closest kin, had stood by and watched
He clenched his jaw, yet the pain clawing at his insides was relentless. “I wronged her…” he whispered, his voice heavy with sorrow and regret. “I wronged Adeline…”
Brian sighed and crouched beside him, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder without saying a word. The others, too, lowered their heads in silence, unwilling to break the fragile moment of anguish.
