Chapter 30%
When I woke up, I had an IV drip in my hand and Shawn was sitting by my side. The room was filled with the smell of disinfectant. Seeing me wake up, Shawn immediately grabbed my hand with worry. “Sierra, how are you feeling? Are you okay?”
I smiled weakly and shook my head.”
“You scared me to death, you know that? Next time something happens, please tell me right away, okay?” Shawn gently stroked my nose, every gesture filled with concern.
I nodded seriously. I had been too impulsive this time. The moment I got the call, I rushed over without thinking, too worried about Mia to consider anything else.
Shawn pulled me into his arms, holding me so tightly it was as if he wanted to merge me into his bones. I could barely breathe. Then, suddenly, something occurred to me. I struggled slightly, looking up at him anxiously. “Mia… is she okay?”
“She’s fine, don’t worry,” he said, looking me in the eyes. “And… Joshua is fine too.“}
“Okay,” I replied, not wanting to say too much, afraid Shawn might overthink things.
Still, Shawn continued, “We really should thank him for what happened today. I can’t imagine what might have happened if it weren’t for him. Sierra, I can’t live without you.”
He pulled me into his arms again. I leaned into him, breathing in his warmth, his familiar scent. It was comforting, so much better than the sterile smell of disinfectant in the hospital. Then, there was a sudden knock on the door. The door wasn’t fully closed, just slightly ajar. Shawn and I instinctively turned to look.
Joshua stood at the doorway, his hand wrapped in bandages, his expression distant and unreadable.
“Come in,” Shawn said.
Joshua hesitated before stepping inside. He coughed lightly, his voice weak as he looked at me and asked, “Evelyn, are you okay?“} I nodded. “I’m fine.”
“That’s good.” His gaze shifted downward as if he was finally relieved.
A brief silence followed. Without looking at us, Joshua stared at the ground and said, “Since you’re okay, I’ll be leaving now. Take care of yourself.“2
He turned to leave. I looked at his straight back, feeling a little touched and couldn’t help but say, “Thank you, Joshua. Thank you for saving me.”
Joshua’s body stiffened for a few seconds. He didn’t turn around or respond to my words and simply left.
Shawn came over and interlocked his fingers with mine. He let out a quiet sigh. “I hope he can move on soon.“}
Yes, since the past is already in the past, I hope Joshua can move on from it.
