Chapter 29N
I never imagined that in the final moment, it would be Joshua who rushed over and grabbed my hand. Mia and I were left dangling from the rooftop, hanging by Joshua’s last shred of strength. Just a hair’s breadth away, we were about to leave this world for good.
Zafrielle, who had been watching, clearly started to panic. “Joshua, why are you saving her? She should have died a long time ago!” Her shrill voice cut through the wind, stabbing at my eardrums.N
Joshua was still straining to pull Mia and me up, but his strength was limited. No matter how hard he tried, it wasn’t working. Sweat covered his face, but he forced himself to stay calm and reassured me, “Just hold on a little longer. The police will be here soon. Just a little longer.”
His arms were already turning purple. One of my hands was locked in his grip, while the other held onto Mia. I was reaching my limit. Through gritted teeth, Joshua said firmly, “Evelyn, don’t be afraid. No matter what happens this time, I won’t let go. I won’t let you die.”
“Seriously? You’re still being so affectionate at a time like this?” Zafrielle sneered. “Joshua, you’re pathetic! She doesn’t even love you anymore! She married another man! Why can’t you just turn around and look at me for once?“N
She reached out to touch Joshua’s face, but he turned away in disgust. That small gesture seemed to push Zafrielle over the edge. She let out a furious, ear–piercing scream.
“You despise me? You dare to despise me?! I’ll kill Evelyn! Die, Evelyn!” She stomped down on Joshua’s hand, trying to force him to let go.
I watched in horror as her heel crushed his fingers, splitting skin and flesh. Sweat dripped from his forehead, but his grip on me only tightened. He refused to let go.
“Die, die, die! Just die already!” Zafrielle had completely lost her mind.
My strength was draining fast. Even if Joshua hadn’t let go, I wouldn’t have been able to hold on much longer and I was also running out of strength to hold Mia.
“Shawn, I’m sorry. I promised you that I’d always stay by your side, but I can’t keep that promise anymore. Please, don’t hate me.“N
At the edge of life and death, I slowly closed my eyes, only to hear the sudden sound of police officers storming the rooftop. Some officers quickly subdued Zafrielle while me and Mia were pulled to safety.
I was completely drained. Both Joshua and I collapsed as we were carried into the ambulance. In the last moment before I fell unconscious, I seemed to clearly see Joshua staring into my eyes and saying, “Evelyn, I love you.”
