Chapter 230
I just stood there, seeing Joshua’s face on TV, which was both familiar and foreign at the same time. He was telling my story, but his voice stirred nothing within me. My heart had already been worn down, its sharp edges smoothed away by the endless torment of that time. Now, nothing he said could stir my emotions anymore.
Joshua had called upon the entire city to send me apology messages. The moment the program aired, my phone started buzzing non–stop. “Evelyn, I love you. Please forgive me. Joshua.”}
The worst part was I couldn’t reach Shawn. I kept calling and texting him, but he wouldn’t pick up. I knew he’d been on edge recently, terrified that I might fall for Joshua again. After all, he was someone I’d once loved.
Joshua’s actions must have terrified him, making him hide. All night, I was bombarded with his apology texts. Little did he know, I was up all night searching for Shawn. I finally found him in the orphanage where I grew up. I still remember when little Shawn, hand in hand with his mother, appeared there, bringing light into my bleak world. Now, I wanted to fill his future with light, too.
“Evelyn!” Before I could go in, Joshua grabbed my arm. He’d found his way here, too.
“What are you doing here?” I turned back to look at him, confusion in my voice.
“Evelyn, did you hear everything I said on TV? I truly understand my mistakes now! I sincerely apologize! Evelyn, I love you. I have always loved you. I will always love you. Please, forgive me!“}]
Joshua’s earnest words stirred something in me, but I shook off his grip. “I’m sorry, Joshua, I don’t love you anymore. I’m married now. My husband is Shawn and your wife, Evelyn, is dead.”
The light in Joshua’s eyes flickered out. As I turned to leave, I glanced back at him. “Oh, I forgot to mention something. My real name is Sierra Salvatore. I only changed it after the family adopted me and I loved Shawn before I married you. My adoptive mother forced me to marry you because of our families.“}
Joshua’s face changed drastically. I knew he couldn’t accept my words. He had always believed I loved him. Whether it was during our once–happy marriage, during the torment he inflicted on me after his memory loss, or even now, he still thought I loved him but just refused to forgive him.
I smiled calmly. “So, Joshua, give up. No matter how you try, I love Shawn.“}]
Joshua let go, standing there stiffly, motionless. I didn’t have time for him. I rushed inside to find Shawn. I needed to explain, to tell him I loved him and that I’d never leave him for anyone else.”
