Chapter 198
The wedding was over. A server informed us that Joshua was still locked up in a separate room and hadn’t left yet.
I glanced at Shawn with concern. He immediately patted my head gently and said in a soft voice, “Wait here for me. I’ll go check on him. Don’t worry, it’ll be fine.”
“Okay.” As I watched Shawn walk away, I couldn’t shake the unease in my heart.
The banquet hall was now empty. The moment Shawn opened the door, Joshua charged at him like a madman. Joshua, who hadn’t fought back even after taking several punches earlier, was now swinging his fists wildly at Shawn like a rabid dog. Shawn wasn’t about to back down either, so the two of them started grappling.
I couldn’t shake off my worries, so I followed them. As expected, I saw the violent scene as soon as I opened the door. “Stop fighting! Both of you, stop!” Without thinking, I rushed in to break up the fight.
The second Joshua saw me, it was like someone had hit his pause button. He froze, staring straight at me. Even as Shawn landed a few more punches on him, he didn’t react at all. Shawn stumbled slightly as I pulled him behind me, finally putting an end to the chaos.
“Evelyn! Is that you, Evelyn? You’re not dead, are you? Evelyn, do you have any idea how devastated I was? I thought you were gone forever!” Joshua swallowed hard, his eyes brimming with tears. Blood stained the corner of his lips and his clothes were dirty and disheveled. As he spoke, he reached out toward me.
I pressed my lips together and instinctively took two steps back, avoiding his touch. “I’m sorry, but you’ve got the wrong person. I’m not Evelyn.”
“My name is Sierra Salvatore. After that, I didn’t spare him another glance. I took Shawn’s hand, ready to leave.
Joshua’s Adam’s apple bobbed as a look of despair spread across his face. He staggered to his feet and suddenly lunged forward, reaching for my arm.
I frowned, but Shawn had already shielded me behind him before I could react. “Joshua, how many times do I have to tell you? Evelyn is dead. She is not your Evelyn.” Shawn’s gaze was sharp and distant.
Joshua just stared at me, shaking his head over and over. “No! No way. You’re lying. She is Evelyn! She never died!”
‘Shawn, she’s your sister! How could you … “His eyes suddenly widened as if something clicked. “I get it now… I’m the fool here, aren’t I? You two played me!”
My heart felt like it was being squeezed, making it hard to breathe. I slowly lifted my gaze and just stared at Joshua. Maybe my expression scared him because his whole demeanor suddenly softened.
He looked at me with pleading eyes and whispered, “Evelyn, I’m sorry. I know I was wrong. Can you forgive me? I was awful to you before, I know that. I never should’ve treated you that way. I deserve whatever punishment you give me. But please, just give me another chance. I’ll do anything, Evelyn.“”
Shawn cast me a worried glance, but my gaze remained unwavering and my expression completely unchanged. I repeated myself, “I’m sorry. My name is Sierra.” Then, I took Shawn’s hand and walked away.”
Joshua stood frozen in place, watching our retreating figures. It was as if all the strength in his body had been drained. In the end, he collapsed to the ground like a puppet with its strings cut.
