Chapter 5
We took Bella out with us and saw Tom a few times outside the neighborhood. He was wearing his old clothes, having lost a lot of weight. His footsteps were unsteady.
The last time I saw him, he had his foot in a cast and was leaning on a crutch.
I tried to recall the feelings I once had for him, but I realized that my heart had become so numb that I could no longer access those emotions.
On the day I received the approved divorce papers, he told me he hadn’t had a chance to clean up the house, so he was just sleeping on a mattress. In the middle of the night, he got up and kicked the drawer of the cabinet, breaking his foot.
“Really? Be careful,” I replied indifferently.
He was still struggling, asking me how he could make it up to
me.
I snorted, “Can you turn back time or turn back the amniotic fluid?”
His face turned pale.
“I dream of going back to that night,” he said.

He could dream on.
I kept my promise and let him see Elizabeth in the car. He carefully held her and cried, saying he was wrong.
I reminded him, “My daughter’s name is Bella.”
“Bella. That’s a good name,” he replied.
After we got out of the car, he took out a pair of bracelets. “This is a gift from Isabel for Bella.”
I didn’t take them. “They’re nice, but you can keep them for your own baby.”
He grabbed me, eager to explain, “I swear, nothing is going on between Isabel and me. We’re just friends. You have to believe
me.”
“Oh.” I shrugged him off and slammed the car door shut.
Bella was allergic to gold. The bracelets we had prepared for her caused a rash around her wrists after just two minutes of wearing them.
Harry also found it amusing. “I’m going to melt them down into gold bars for you. When you grow up and need pocket money, just sell them.”
I asked him, “Would you let your niece run out of pocket money?”

He paused for a few seconds before answering, “No.”
When we got home, Harry cooked a delicious meal and opened the most expensive bottle of wine to celebrate my divorce.
At the same time, he delivered some bad news. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
That was when I suddenly realized why he had hesitated when he said no earlier.
I nodded. “It’s okay. I’ll stay with you through the treatment.”
Harry was hospitalized, and I found myself running between the hospital and home, while also starting to deal with company matters.
After our dad passed away, he left a mess behind. Harry had worked tirelessly for years to get the company back on track. I didn’t want all his hard work to go to waste. So, I decided to change the company’s
name.
I also wanted to prove to him that I could provide a good life for myself and Bella, without needing him to worry.
We held meetings by his hospital bed, and Harry patiently taught me everything.
“Sara, you’ve surprised me,” he said.
I hummed, “Do you think of me as just someone who cries all the lime?”

“Yeah,” he chuckled. “In my mind, you’re still the little girl who
needs me to comfort.”
I cried on his bed. The more he comforted me, the more I couldn’t hold back.
