Taking a deep breath, Callum said, “You can have the house; it’s his gift to you. It’s now yours, and you can move in with your mother without the need to rent.”
Tears fell onto the papers in front of Thalassa, staining the white sheets with their wetness. At first, the droplets lingered on the surface, but gradually, they permeated the fibers, dampening the document.
She gripped the papers tightly, then loosened her hold, pushing them towards Callum with a voice choked by sobs, “Please, take these back to Amelia, or Leopold’s father. I have no right to accept his things.”
She wouldn’t take Lysander’s money, nor would she claim any of Leopold’s estate. She had no claim to it, no reason to take anything from him.
How could he be so foolish as to buy the villa she had put up for sale and secretly put it in her name? He knew that even with this gesture, there was no possibility for anything more between them.
Thinking of Leopold, Thalassa’s heart felt as if countless thin ropes were constricting it-suffocating, wrenching with pain, leaving her feeling helpless, regretful, and heartbroken.
“Thalassa!” Callum’s voice dropped with a heavy resonance that filled the room, his complexion darkening, his hands trembling slightly.
With restrained anger and eyes that were typically gentle, now filled with irritation, he looked at her.
“When he was alive, you repeatedly broke his heart. Now that he’s gone, dead, do you understand? His last wish was for you to accept this house he left for you. Can’t you fulfill even this simple dying wish? Besides, I must complete the tasks he entrusted to me before he passed!”
Saying this, Callum pushed the papers and the keys back towards Thalassa.
After finishing his piece, he stood up, walked to the door of the private booth, paused, and without turning around, he said, “I really hope you won’t let him down.”
With that, Callum opened the door and left.
The door closed with a soft click.
Thalassa clenched her fists and wept, her vision blurred by tears that fell drop by drop onto the contract, the paper absorbing her
sorrow.
Leopold, why did you have to be so good to me? I don’t deserve it; I really don’t deserve your kindness. Why couldn’t you forget me and start anew? Wouldn’t that have been better for you?
Callum said you would do anything for me, that you would risk your life without a second thought. Did your death have something to do with me too? Weren’t you just a victim of that business explosion, but also of me?
The pain in Thalassa’s heart was so intense she could hardly breathe.
After what seemed like an eternity, when her tears had nearly dried up, that suffocating feeling still stuck in her chest, making it
hard to breathe.
Finally, she picked up the papers and keys from the table, preparing to leave.
But as Thalassa rose, her legs faltered, almost sending her tumbling to the floor. She grabbed the table just in time to steady
herself.
Her eyes caught sight of the contract again, and fresh tears flooded her eyes. Her hand gripping the table clenched tight, her nails scratching the wood with a hiss that echoed the torment in her heart.
Was Leopold not just driven to his end by Lysander but also by her breaking his heart?
Was she, like Lysander, a murderer of Leopold?
Thalassa couldn’t forgive Lysander, nor could she forgive herself.
