Heat hung heavy and thick in the air.
It tantalized Thalassa’s senses, causing her taut heart to skip a beat.
No one understood Lysander’s current state better than she did.
Her internal alarm bells were sounding, but she was paralyzed and frozen in place.
In silence, she held Elowen’s soft and little body in her arms. Behind her, Lysander’s broad, heated chest enveloped her; his arms were wrapping around her, and his hot breath was falling on the nape of her neck.
She was torn between protecting her precious baby and the imminent danger of the beast that could tear her to shreds at any moment.
Time ticked away.
Elowen grew softer in her arms. She had fallen asleep.
And behind her, Lysander’s burning presence didn’t diminish. She had no clue if he was asleep or not.
Thalassa attempted to move, but a low, magnetic male voice stopped her.
“Regret not attending his funeral?” His voice was laced with a hint of bitterness.
Thalassa, who was going to move, suddenly froze; her nerves were on edge.
Lysander’s sudden question left her puzzled and alarmed, unable to decipher his intentions or his current state of mind.
Leopold Sinclair, his nephew, was dead. Didn’t that affect him?
“Answer me!” Lysander demanded when she didn’t respond.
Thalassa shivered before responding, “Of course I regret it. Who wouldn’t be regretful for not being able to send off a friend on their last journey?”
“Why didn’t you come to me?” Lysander asked.
He hadn’t lifted his head as he spoke. He kept his posture to hold Thalassa as his face nuzzled her neck. His words, transformed into breath, brushed against her vulnerable skin, heightening the sense of danger and oppression.
Thalassa dared not keep silent.
“Zephyr forbade it. If I had come to you, it would have put you in a difficult position,” she explained.
When she found out that Zephyr had explicitly forbidden her from attending Leopold’s funeral, Thalassa had abandoned the idea altogether. She knew that going against Zephyr would result in mutual destruction.
Besides, who was she to insist on attending Leopold’s funeral?
She wasn’t anyone to Leopold, nor to Lysander, and certainly not a member of the Sinclair family.
She had no right to attend Leopold’s funeral.
Lysander’s grip on her tightened slightly as her words stirred ripples in his heart.
So she was considering his feelings?
“Let him rest in peace now. He’s passed away, so don’t think about him anymore, okay?” Lysander’s husky voice suddenly broke the silence,
His large hand gripped her slender shoulder, turning her to face him.
Thalassa lifted her gaze to meet his deep eyes.
Lysander’s hand cupped her chin, his rough fingers gently stroking her skin. His gaze darkened as he leaned in to kiss her.
