Lysander’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, his knuckles white with the strain of holding back his sorrow.
At the pinnacle of power, he could control everything but the heart of the woman he loved. Now, he could empathize with Leopold’s agony of unrequited love. The pain was indeed excruciating.
The car pulled to a stop in the driveway of the villa.
Thalassa opened the door and stepped out. As if expecting her response, she turned sharply. Tears brimming in her eyes, she said to Lysander, “Go back to your life. The kids and I will make do in the countryside. If you want to see them, you can visit. But I won’t hand them over to you. If you try to take them away, I’ll end my life right in front of you. They’re all I have left. Without them, there’s no point in living.”
With those words, Thalassa turned and walked away, her tears finally breaking free.
It was truly over between her and Lysander.
The moment Evelyn died and the unborn child was lost to sorrow was the moment any possibility between them extinguished.
