But she didn’t dare slack off, putting her heart into presenting the rings on display.
“The plain bands are sturdy and practical, the intricate designs are eye-catching, and the classic ones never go out of style. It all depends on what your girlfriend prefers,” the saleslady said with a pleasant smile.
Lysander’s brows furrowed slightly. He hadn’t anticipated that buying a ring could be such a hassle. “Wrap them all up,” he said decisively
The sales associate was stunned, almost thinking she had misheard. She asked again for confirmation, “Mr. Sinclair, are you sure you want all of them?”
“Do I need to repeat myself?” Lysander lifted his eyes, a hint of displeasure in his gaze.
The sales associate’s heart skipped a beat, and she quickly apologized, “No, of course not. I’ll get them all wrapped up for you right away.”
She hurriedly beckoned a colleague to help, and together they started packaging every ring from the display. They had never encountered such a big purchase before. Their faces couldn’t help beaming with joy.
David wasn’t surprised by Lysander’s actions. That was just like his boss-never stingy when it came to the woman he loved. He wished to give her the very best of everything. Previously, Lysander had custom-ordered a ring called Remembrance with an Azure Star sapphire in it-a gem unique in the whole world. He had arranged for the sapphire to be nestled inside a cloud design, a secret surprise for Thalassa. His love for her was intense, yet he carried it with a quiet passion.
When the rings were all packaged, Lysander handed his card to David, who went to process the payment. Moments later, David came back laden with several large bags.
Their next stop was Star Harbor Villa.
David thought about the upcoming proposal and felt his heart swell with happiness. Even the car seemed to speed along more eagerly.
Evelyn entered the Vibrant Oasis Residences card room.
The elderly wasn’t playing cards as usual but had gathered to pore over some gossip on their smartphones, gasping and tsk-tsking.
“Good Lord, is that Evelyn who used to play cards with us?”
“That’s her, for sure. She always seemed so prim and proper, but look at her now, chasing after men.”

odd.”
“Even if she longed for a man, getting married would be respectable. But carrying on with a married man? Look at her, flaunting herself in his bed. Tsk, tsk… She should be collecting some virtue for her daughter and grandchildren.”
Evelyn’s heart raced as she overheard the chatter.
She rushed forward, “What are you reading?”
The card players turned their heads, giving her a glance filled with mockery and scorn.
“Oh, Evelyn, we never thought you’d be so inept at both cards and choosing men. You’ve taken up with a married man and you’ve been brazen in bed. You have no shame.”
“Your daughter having so many kids out of wedlock. Is she following in your footsteps with men on the side?”
Stung by their words, Evelyn’s mind buzzed, her chest heaving with emotion. She lunged to snatch the smartphone.
“Watch your mouths! Or I’ll sue you for defamation!” Evelyn was panting with fury.
The phone was in the hands of the card room’s owner, who didn’t dodge but let Evelyn grab it and said with a smirk, “The truth is right before you. We’re not slandering you. Take a look for yourself.”
Evelyn gripped the phone, a short video playing on the screen.
The video showed captions accusing Evelyn of seducing a married man, Bruce, and shamelessly engaging in affairs with him without a thought for her family.
Below the text was a photo of a young Evelyn and Bruce. Bruce was kissing Evelyn, both of them looking blissful. The photo, cropped from shoulders up and with Evelyn’s bare shoulders in view, suggested she wasn’t wearing anything!
At that image, the tightly wound string in Evelyn’s mind snapped.
A wave of humiliation engulfed her in an instant.
