“Take a deep breath, Ms. Pendleton. We’re just taking your statement in a regular
investigation. No need to let your emotions get the better of you, alright?” Captain Payne
soothed her.
Evelyn’s hands were clenched tightly on the tabletop, her knuckles whitening as she fought to suppress the raging storm within. With a shaky breath, she replied, “I’m fine
now. Go on.”
“So, can you tell me everything that happened when you were with him?” Captain Payne inquired.
She recounted the days of her youth with Bruce, sparing no detail for Captain Payne.
Bruce had initially deceived her, claiming he was a bachelor.
Only after she had fallen head over heels did she discover not only was he married, but he was also entangled with a wealthy woman.
Upon learning this, Evelyn decisively ended things with Bruce.
Later, under the pretense of providing her and her daughter Thalassa with a stable home, Bruce came back, siphoning her money.
Captain Payne zeroed in on the crux of the matter, “How much money did he take from you in total?”
“Three million at first, and then it ballooned to one billion and thirty million,” Evelyn recounted.
The three million came from selling the circular pendant that Lysander had given to Thalassa, and the one billion was siphoned from the Sinclair Group’s coffers-hacked by Atticus.
The additional thirty million was also pilfered from Lysander’s accounts.
She had been out of her mind, handing over such vast sums to Bruce without a second thought.
“We’ll track the transactions through his accounts. He won’t be able to escape justice as long as you can prove he blackmailed you,” Captain Payne assured her.
“He did!” Evelyn asserted vehemently.
“Alright, that’s everything we need for now. Thank you for your cooperation,” Captain Payne said politely.
With the statement complete, Evelyn finally relaxed a bit. She stood up and walked out of the interrogation room.
Chapter 1322
As she exited, she saw Bruce being escorted through the precinct lobby by the police.
He caught sight of Evelyn and instantly knew why she was there-her presence meant
trouble for him.
Now that his facade had crumbled, Bruce turned feral. He lunged toward Evelyn, spouting vitriol like a mad dog.
“Evelyn, you backstabbing wench! Here you are to kick me while I’m down, huh? If you dare say a word to the cops, I’ll end you! Don’t forget how you writhed beneath me not long ago!”
Bruce’s snarling face and clenched teeth conveyed a desperate wish to grab Evelyn and shake her violently.
The police intervened in time to prevent him from getting close. Deeming him too unruly, one officer delivered a sharp kick to Bruce’s knee, bringing him to the ground.
Though Bruce didn’t manage to reach Evelyn, his venomous words cut into her like a knife, each insult stabbing at her heart.
Humiliated and pained, she staggered back, reeling from Bruce’s demonic outburst and his vile accusations.
“Hold on, Ms. Pendleton,” Captain Payne steadied her with a reassuring hand.
“Evelyn, don’t you spread lies, or you’ll regret it! Bruce, kneeling from the blow, continued his threats through gritted teeth.
“And who are you going to make regret anything?” Lysander’s towering figure swiftly moved forward, delivering a punishing kick to Bruce’s face.
Lysander’s aura was formidable, his forehead vein throbbing with rage. If not for moral restraint, he would have personally dealt with the likes of Bruce right then and there.
Bruce spat blood, his teeth dislodged, joining the crimson flow.
Seeing this, Evelyn was petrified, momentarily forgetting her grief.
“Ms. Pendleton, let me escort you out,” offered Captain Payne, still supporting her. Concerned about potential retaliation from Bruce, he instructed his officers before leading Evelyn away, “Lock him up and wait for sentencing!”
