Chapter 2 Send The Betrothal Gifts

Just then, a flash of coldness flickered in Josephine’s eyes. Suddenly, she lowered her head and bit at his finger.

Gasp!

The sudden jolt of pain caused the man to quickly retract his hand. A surge of anger flashed in his eyes as he thrust the dagger toward her neck. “You’re courting death!”

Josephine, however, was clapping her hands, gazing at his with a silly grin. “Hehe. I want to have a lollipop.”

The man’s eyes were filled with a fierce, murderous intent. He pressed the blade of his dagger against her neck.

Her fair neck was grazed by a sharp blade, leaving behind a thin trail of blood that slowly trickled down.

“My neck hurts so much,” Josephine exclaimed in fright, voicing her grievances. “You’re a bad person. Not only are you refusing to play hide and seek with me, but you’re also threatening me with a knife!”

After staring at her for a few seconds, the man abruptly put away his dagger and let out an annoyed huff. “Get lost!”

“You have to hang out with me, or I’ll ignore you!” Josephine said angrily as she grabbed his arm.

“Get lost before I change my mind!” The man, growing impatient, shrugged her off.

A flicker of pain crossed his features as he clutched at his heart.

He gave Josephine a profound look as if he wanted to etch her image into his memory before he turned and walked toward the car.

Behind him, Josephine’s eyelashes fluttered subtly as she let out a quiet sigh. At last, I managed to play dumb and get away with it. This person is quite cautious, but it seems like he has a hidden ailment related to his heart. Had he not had an episode just now, he would’ve definitely spotted my slip-up. I shouldn’t stay here any longer.

Immediately, Josephine feigned terror and dashed toward the alleyway.

The man’s cold, ruthless voice sounded from behind. “Listen closely. If I ever find out you’ve been playing dumb, I’ll make your life more miserable than death itself!”

No sooner had Josephine’s figure vanished from the alleyway than several black sedans came rushing in, stopping not far from the man.

An elderly man jumped out of the car. When he caught sight of the men in black lying on the ground. his expression changed instantly and he rushed forward in a panic. “Mr. Jaywalker, are you all right?”

The man shook his head indifferently. “I’ve taken the medicine I had with me, so I’m fine now. Those assassins who were tailing me were unlucky for bearing the brunt of my frustration.” Otherwise, considering how I can’t control myself when I have my episode, the girl from before would have died.

The elderly man hastily nodded, yet his gaze lingered on the alleyway with uncertainty. “Should we silence the person who just passed by?”

“That’s not necessary,” Michael Jaywalker said nonchalantly. Suddenly, as if recalling something, he looked up and asked, “Jorvan, is the daughter of the Sommer family from Junbert mentally ill?”

“How do you know that? The third daughter of the Sommer family is a fool, with the intellect of a seven or eight-year-old.” The elder, Jorvan Parrish, chuckled. “She was the one originally betrothed to you, but the Sommer family mentioned that you could choose from the other two daughters—”

“Send over the betrothal gifts tonight. I’m marrying the third daughter.” With that, Michael turned and left.

Jorvan was taken aback before hastily catching up to Michael. “Mr. Jaywalker, that girl is a fool, you know.”

“Only a fool wouldn’t cause trouble.” Michael walked up to the car.

In his hand, he held a copper necklace, one he had just pulled off Josephine’s neck. She doesn’t even have a decent piece of jewelry. It seems like the Sommer family hasn’t been treating my new bride well.

He paused before adding, “Choose the best items as the betrothal gifts.”

The bodyguard opened the car door. Just as Michael was about to get in, he turned around again. “Forget it. You guys lack taste. Send the gift list to the car. I’ll personally choose for her.”

Michael settled into the car, casually discarding the mask that had covered his face. His dark eyes narrowed slightly.

The engagement was arranged by his grandfather, Ronald Jaywalker, so he had no choice but to comply.

If the bride were a fool, things would be much easier for him.

His secret could not be discovered, and in this world, there were only two types of people who could keep a secret, namely the dead and his woman.

Michael glanced at his finger, where two small teeth marks were imprinted on his slender digit.

His lips curved slightly, finding Josephine’s naivety amusing. She actually dared to bite me hard enough to draw blood. In the entire Junbert, she’s the only one who dares to hurt me. No one does. Does she like lollipops? After we get married, I’ll let her have her fill!

Jorvan respectfully saw Michael off to his car before subtly signaling his subordinates with a covert glance to silence Josephine.

Even if Michael had instructed to spare her, Jorvan still had to ensure that everything was foolproof.

That was because Michael’s secret absolutely couldn’t be leaked. Otherwise, it would cause a massive uproar.

Josephine stepped out of the alley, tucking away the silver needle she had been holding in her hand.

Earlier, while she was being taken advantage of by Michael, she discreetly held a silver needle in her hand. She was ready to strike him dead by hitting his vital point if he dared to make another move on her. He was lucky to have backed off in time, saving his own life.

Josephine was about to leave when suddenly, two figures darted from the side, blocking her path. “Are you the woman who saw Master’s frenzy episode earlier?”

“Frenzy episode?” Josephine was slightly taken aback. So, this Master they’re referring to is the masked man from before? By the time I arrived at the alley, the man had already annihilated his opponents. He’s very capable in combat. What exactly had happened?

Upon noticing the change in her complexion, the two men confirmed her identity. They exchanged a knowing glance before immediately drawing their knives and charging toward her.

They’re planning to silence me? Josephine’s eyes turned frosty.

She swiftly sidestepped, immediately followed by a swift raise of her hand.

The two silver needles she held in her palm were released, piercing into the pressure points on the necks of the two men.

The two of them didn’t even make a sound and fell straight to the ground, unconscious.

Josephine bent over to pick up the silver needles, her expression slightly cold. Do they really think I’m a fool? My decade-long study of acupuncture wasn’t for nothing. Looking for trouble!

She lifted her foot and stepped over the two men, heading toward the bus station.

Due to a severe fever she had as a child that temporarily clouded her mind, Caiden mistakenly thought she was a fool. Taking advantage of this situation, he drove Josephine and her mother out of the house, forcing them to live in the countryside.

Over the past decade or so, Caiden had completely ignored Josephine, even assuming she had lost her wits.

On this matter, however, Josephine didn’t want to reveal the truth just yet.

Given that the Jaywalker and Sommer families had a marriage agreement, the Jaywalker family was set to come and choose the bride the next day. Josephine had no desire to be used as a bargaining chip in a business alliance and married off to a man she didn’t love. So, she decided to play the fool till the end.

After all, the Jaywalker family, the wealthiest in Junbert, would accept a fool to become the lady of the Jaywalker family.

With these thoughts in mind, Josephine’s steps became lighter.

Her venture into the city this time was not for the Jaywalker family’s arranged marriage but for a matter of great importance.

Therefore, she absolutely couldn’t let herself be confined by marriage, trapped in a wealthy household like a bird in a gilded cage.
