Best friends
Meghan’s POV
“Do you realise that you just made things worse?” Ryan yelled over the phone and I groaned. It was rather too early for a lecture, wasn’t it?
“Ryan please,” I sighed. “I did exactly what they wanted me to do. I went on the livestream and confessed the truth. It’s not my fault the world didn’t believe me,” I huffed.
“Are you even listening to yourself?” He fired. “You went live with a battered face and bandages to denounce a claim on domestic violence and you expect the world to just believe he didn’t force you? What the hell even happened to your face?”
That was the whole point of it. I couldn’t have the whole world hating me if Carter refused to take me back. I needed something that would give me a permanent place in their hearts.
“I tripped while I was running down the stairs. I was just trying to meet up with time and I tried explaining in on the livestream but no one listened,” I lied.
“First of all, Meghan, no one is stupid. You can’t get injuries like that from falling off the stairs. You incure mostly internal injuries and when if the fall was that serious, you’re not even supposed to be alive and you still wouldn’t have these cuts. So are you going to tell me the truth now or what?” He demanded.
I rolled my eyes. Did he really think I was just going to open up and tell him everything so he could use it as blackmail material later on? No, thanks.
“Ryan. I appreciate the concern, but I don’t need a lecture right now.” I pressed my fingers against my temple, feeling a headache creeping in.
“You don’t need a lecture?” he scoffed. “Meghan, you’re sabotaging yourself! You went live looking like you just escaped a damn crime scene, and now people are saying Carter forced you into it. You basically handed
a reason to drag both of you through hell.”

I sighed, sinking into the couch. “I had no choice, okay? I needed to Carter to forgive me, that is why I went live to confess. I have no control over what people think. I just don’t want to lose him, okay?”
Ryan fell silent for a beat, then exhaled sharply. “So that’s it? You’re still chasing after him? After everything?”
“I love him,” I whispered, my voice barely audible even to myself.
“No, Meghan. You love the idea of him,” Ryan shot back. “Carter is a selfish bastard who only cares about himself. He doesn’t give two shits another you. The only woman he wants is Veronica and if you keep pushing him hard, you are going to regret it for sure, trust me.”
“You don’t understand.”
“What don’t I understand? That you’d rather let the world hate force him into your clutches than admit Carter doesn’t give a damn about you anymore? Do you realise that you are tearing down a family legacy, Meghan?”
Yes, I was fully aware that their reputation was at stake but I could easily restore it back after marriage. They were the ones doing this to
themselves.
“This isn’t about what you think. I know what I’m doing.”
“No. you don’t.” His voice softened, but it carried the weight of frustration. “You’re trying to hold onto someone who already let you go, and you’re hurting yourself in the process.”
I swallowed, my throat tight. “I just need more time.”
Ryan sighed, long and heavy. “Time won’t change the fact that he doesn’t love you, Meghan. And the longer you keep this up, the more damage you’ll do, to yourself.”
I clenched my jaw, refusing to acknowledge his words. “I have to go.”
“Meghan…”
I hung up before he could say anything else, tossing my phone onto the table. I didn’t need Ryan’s pity or his lectures. He didn’t understand.
Carter would come around. He had to.
Because if he didn’t… he would leave me no choice but to do the one thing I never thought I would.
My phone rang again and this time it was Mrs Grayson. I sighed. She was. going to lecture too and even threaten me.
I answered the call.
“What is wrong with you? Why do you keep doing things out of impulse, huh? Are you trying to ruin your little chances?” She yelled.
Now I had to suck up to her and accept I was wrong.
“Mom. I understand you perfectly but I need you to know that I didn’t intentionally tarnish his image. I aud a talk with Carter earlier today and I told him I would go on a livestream to clear the air about the arrest. On my way down the stairs, I fell and got severely injured..I tried to explain to people but they immediately though he was responsible. Even I explained on the lid stream, no one would listen to me,” I told her.
It was a lie of course but I could tell she already believed me.
“Oh, dear. You should have postponed it, now Carter is going to be so mad at you,” she exclaimed.
Who cares if he is angry or not? Since he wanted to be as stubborn as a mule, I was going to put him in his rightful place.
“I’m so sorry, mom. I didn’t know that it was going to further damage things. I just wanted to correct my mistakes,” I broke down in a fake sob. “But I have only made things worse, haven’t I? He hates me.”
Mrs. Grayson let out a heavy sigh, her tone softening. “Oh, sweetheart, Carter doesn’t hate you. He’s just… upset. This entire situation is a mess, and you need to be careful about how you handle things moving forward.”
I wiped at my dry eyes, forcing my voice to tremble. “I just want to fix everything. I love him so much, and I don’t know what else to do.”
There was a pause before she spoke again, her voice laced with calculation. “We can still turn this around, but you have to listen to me, Meghan. No more reckless moves. No more live streams. We need something concrete to bind Carter to you before it’s too late.”
A smirk played on my lips. I would forever be grateful for having this woman by my side. No matter how much I messed up, I knew she was always going to find a way to clean my mess.

I was still jubilating my win when a notification came in. I opened it and rage slowly seeped through my veins.
It was a picture of Carter coming out of a hotel with that Arie girl.
Now she was really becoming a problem and I hated pests.
I called him back immediately.
“I’m guessing you even gotten the photos I sent you, ma’am,” he said as soon ad he answered the call.
“How long have they been in there?” I asked.
“Since last night,” he responded and my fists clenched tightly. That little hoe!
“I need everything you can gather on her. Where she lives, who she stays with, what she’s in town for…”
“That won’t be necessary, ma’am. I already investigated that. Apparently, she used to be Orthon’s middle school friend. She just came back into the country with her son and since then, she has been staying with Orthon,” he informed me.
Orthon had a childhood friend and I knew nothing about her? I
understand that we weren’t exactly close but I was Carter’s best friend. I should have known about her.
But that didn’t matter now. What mattered was that she was trying to steal him away from me under the guise of friendship. I knew how these female best friends behaved, I mean, I was one of them.
And I would be damned if I let one of them take my man away from me.

“I need you to deliver a very nice warning to her…” I said and I could feel his smile at the other end of the line. “That stupid face of hers, I want it permanently damaged.”
