Chapter 32
Orthon’s POV
Minutes turned to hours and I became worried. Why was she taking so long? I called her again for the umpteenth time but there was no response.
I was beginning to her bothered about it. My phone rang and I quickly looked at the ID, thinking she was calling only to see Carter.
A sigh fell off my lips. He has been calling for the last twenty minutes. I didn’t know what he wanted and I wasn’t ready to find out because if it was serious, my sister would have called me.
I got into my car and headed to find her. My phone rang again and I groaned. I was almost a hundred percent sure it was about Veronica.
Has she gone back to him already?
The thought made my chest tighten. Is that why he was calling? To gloat? But didn’t she see the news of his engagement? Was she ready to deal with that?
I hoped not. Veronica deserved so much better and it hurt me to see that she was ready to go back to a man who hurt her when I was right here, ready to burn the world for her.
I arrived at the mansion soon enough and walked inside.
“Veronica?” I called, immediately noticing how unusually silent the place was. “Veronica? Are you in here?”
There was no response to that as well. In the end, I had to go to her room. I knocked twice but there was no response.

“I’m coming in.” I warned, pushing the door open. The sight before me made my breath hitch.
She was there, sprawled on the floor in a pool of her own blood.
“Veronica!” I gasped, running to her. My first contact with her skin gave me goosebumps. She was turning cold.
How long has she been here and what the fuck happened? I didn’t wait to find out. I checked her pulse and although it was weak, it was there.
I carried her quickly to the car and the guards stared at me in shock. It would definitely come back to them later. They would explain how the hell this happened.
On arrival at the hospital, she was taken to the emergency ward while I called Meshach.
“Orthon,” I could hear the smile in his voice. “How are you doing?”
“Uhm… where are you, sir?” I asked. I didn’t want to bother him if he was on a business trip. I knew he would cancel it all and come back.
“Dubai,” he answered. “Is there a problem? I was just picking out gifts for Veronica. She is still yet to talk to me so I want to try to make it up to her while seeking her forgiveness.”
Right! It wasn’t a business meeting then.
“About Veronica… something happened,” I started and I could feel the tension at the other end of the line.
“What do you mean by that?”
“I called her earlier to meet up at the park and she told me she was going to get ready. After that, I tried calling her back several times but she wouldn’t answer. I went over to the house to find her unconscious, in a

pool of blood.” I informed him.
“What?!” He yelled. “My daughter? In a pool of blood?!”
“I’ve taken her to the hospital now, and hopefully, they will be able to revive her. I don’t know what happened but it was really bad. If I had delayed further, she would have been dead.” I sighed.
“All this happened yet there are guards scattered around?” I had never heard Meshach sound as angry as he did now. “Please make sure she receives proper care, I will be there in a few hours or less.”

“Okay, sir,” I nodded and hung up. I ran my hand through my hair with a sigh. Of all the times this had to happen. I just prayed that nothing happened to the baby, Veronica would be devastated.
My phone rang again and once again, it was Carter. I answered with
annoyance.
“When you call a person twice, it’s either they are busy, or they just don’t fucking want to speak with you, so why the fuck are you blowing up my phone with calls?” I snapped.
There was silence for a few seconds. I guess he wasn’t expecting that from me. Well, I wasn’t either, but the thought of Veronica going back to the shit face made me loathe him.
“When were you going to tell me that Veronica was pregnant?” He asked, catching me off–guard. She told him already?
“First of all, I do not owe you anything. Secondly, I am not her
mouthpiece. Lastly, unless she outrightly told you that she was pregnant, you have no reason to call me to confirm rumours!”
“So you’re saying she’s not?” He asked and I wanted to hang up right there and now.
“Do you not have her number to call and confirm? Like I said, whatever she does with her life is absolutely none of your business! Focus on your engagement!” The annoyance was already seeping through my tone.
I wanted him to leave me the fuck alone. I was hurting enough! I had Veronica to worry about. The last thing I needed was to entertain his silly.
tantrums,
“Who’s the father?” He went ahead to demand. “I know she’s pregnant, so tell me, uncle, who is the father? Is it me or have you been sleeping with my wife?!”
“Ex–wife!” 1 corrected stiflly. “And what if I am? What are you going to do about it?”
“What?”
“You heard me. The child is mine. What now?” I challenged and he went completely quiet.
“How could you?! She is my wife?! Do you know I can sue you for that?!” He barked as if he’d just found his backbone.
“Before you start running your mouth, maybe you should look at your pregnant mistress, who you just engaged despite refusing to divorce Veronica,” I said calmly.
“I… I… It’s complicated…” he feebly offered and I scoffed.
“No, there is nothing complicated about what you did. It just shows how much of a selfish, pathetic, hypocritical bastard you are! This should be the last time you’ll call me to discuss this nonsense!” I warned and hung
up.
Disgusting piece of shit!
The doctor stepped out at that moment and I sprang to my feet.
“How is she, doctor? Is she responding?” I asked before he could even speak.
“Yes. she is fine.” he nodded. “We have been able to stop the bleeding. Apparently, it was a stab wound.”
“What?”
A stab wound? How?! Did someone attack her inside the mansion? Oh
God!
“Yes. It was very deep, too, and she lost a lot of blood. You are lucky you brought her at the time you did. She will be fine,” he assured me.
“And the baby?” I asked, worriedly.
His expression immediately changed and I feared the worst.
