I couldn’t remember how long it had been since we last held hands and walked freely like this. We worked very hard to build our future, and luckily, our feelings for each other remained the same. “We’re going to pick a present.”
“What present? What’s the special occasion?”
Colin froze and flicked my earlobe with his finger. “Do you have a goldfish memory?”
I massaged my tingly earlobe and replayed whatever happened these two days in my mind. The incident this morning quickly resurfaced.
Right, I was supposed to buy Jasmine a birthday present. We exchanged voice messages. I totally forgot about it. It was hard to remember when she was an insignificant part of my life. But hey, saying I had a goldfish memory was uncalled for. When did Colin learn to mock me? I had to retaliate.
I scrunched my nose and imitated the condescending look on his face. I retorted, “She’s a nobody. Why should I remember that?
“You, Colin White, however, took it to heart. I guess she must hold a special meaning to you. The Colin I know would never remember a thing about people he doesn’t care about.”

Then, I tried to withdraw my hand from his grip. One, I hated to see the smug grin on his face. And two, it was recess time. There were a lot of students and lecturers roaming around. As the youngest and the most handsome lecturer, Colin was very famous. Many people could recognize him.
And we were holding hands in public. Passersby would take a quick glance at our interlocked fingers, and I felt uneasy to be gawked at like an animal at the zoo. Furthermore, I was a student while he was a lecturer. We should keep a low profile. And Colin should look the part of a lecturer.
Oftentimes, I wondered how we fell into a forbidden relationship between a lecturer and a student. We grew up together. In a sense, one could say that we were childhood friends-turned-lovers. He was older than me, but that didn’t mean we couldn’t date each other.
Fortunately for us, everyone was more open-minded now. A lecturer-student relationship was no longer a taboo. Many lecturers and teaching assistants were only a few years older than the students. Many developed feelings for each other as they worked closely together.
Colin and I were not the only case. And that was why our love story was well sung on campus, and other students envied us. However, that didn’t mean we could do whatever we wanted. We ought to be discreet when the situation called for it.
Colin took my bantering lightly. He smiled at me for a while in silence. Then, he grabbed my hand, weaved his fingers between mine, and dragged me out of the campus.
In the next hour, we visited several shopping centers and luxury shops but failed to find any suitable gifts. Colin and I sat inside a coffee house, stumped. The reason for our failure came from inexperience. Colin, like any other man, hardly gave me any gifts even when we were dating. During festive seasons, he would give me his credit card so that I could prepare gifts for him.
