Georgia stood steaming as she watched the car drive away, her breath heavy with frustration. Yet, her anger didn’t last long. Quickly, she set her child down, stood them upright, and pulled out her smartphone. “Mom,” she said, dialing her mother’s number, “I had Alaric go to the clinic for a paternity test. I’m leaving it in your hands now.”
Once she received a reassuring response, Georgia hung up, relieved. She scooped up her child and hailed a cab to leave.
After leaving the café, Hertha didn’t go straight home. She sat in the back of the taxi, her expression somber as she gazed out the window at the passing scenery, feeling miserable. As she watched, she suddenly felt something wet trickle down her cheeks. Reaching up, she wiped her face and looked at her hand. Tears. She was actually crying! The usually carefree and bold Hertha was crying! Georgia’s words had struck a deep chord, severing any hopes she had of being with Alaric.
She had tried to overlook Alaric’s one-night stand with Georgia from three years ago, hoping for the sake of their children, she could move past it and marry him. But learning that Georgia also had Alaric’s child was too much. Both of them had children with him! Where did that leave her? Insisting on being with Alaric would label her the other woman! But what truly made it impossible for her to accept him was her unwillingness to forgive Alaric for having a child with another woman.
Deciding to let go was one thing, but why did it hurt so much more? It turned out that facing a new hurt after trying to accept and move past the initial pain was far more excruciating.

Lysander softly touched her nose, smiling. “You looked so peaceful sleeping; I didn’t have the heart to wake you.”
