Chapter 07: It was on the Way
I felt the meal was tasteless.
I patiently accompanied Daphne with a small drink.
Fletcher didn’t engage in the conversation. Throughout the dinner, we barely exchanged a few words.
However, his phone kept vibrating non–stop.
Fletcher didn’t seem upset; instead, he replied with patience, his lips occasionally curling into a smile. He barely ate his food.
I didn’t need to guess who was on the other end of those messages.
Daphne noticed, her anxiety growing with

every passing moment. When Fletcher stepped out for a while, she whispered to me, “Lena, what do you think? Why is Letch suddenly acting so obsessed?”
I could stand.
After all, the Fletcher I knew in the past would never spend so much time responding to messages.
But now, it was different.
After the meal, the chauffeur from the Lynton family was waiting outside. Daphne glanced at Fletcher, who was still busy replying to messages, and instructed, “It’s late. Can you send Lena home?”
Fletcher acted as though he hadn’t heard.
I quickly spoke up to diffuse the situation.

“Daphne, I’ve called a ride.”
A rare flash of guilt appeared in Daphne’s eyes.
Not long
after, only Fletcher and I remained. in front of the restaurant. As I opened the ride–hailing app, Fletcher’s deep voice reached my ears. “Let’s go.”
I looked at him in surprise, finally realizing that he intended to take me home.
“Thank you, Mr. Lynton, but I’ve already called a car.”
Fletcher paused, his brown eyes fixed on my face. With a tone tinged with mockery, he said, “What’s wrong? Afraid your boyfriend will misunderstand?”
I didn’t bother to argue further.

A few dozen for a cab ride? Better save it if I could.
I couldn’t deny that the comfort of a luxury car was hard to beat.
It wasn’t long before I found myself sinking into the plush passenger seat, my eyelids. growing heavy.
I hadn’t slept well in the past two or three days, and the alcohol only made me more drowsy.
Somehow, Fletcher noticed. His voice, gentle, floated to me. “Go ahead and sleep. I’ll wake you when we get there.”
His tone was unexpectedly kind.
I hesitated for two seconds before

sleepiness overtook my rationality.
I didn’t know how long had passed, but I faintly heard the sound of my phone vibrating. I slowly opened my eyes.
In my blurry vision, I saw Fletcher, his face now only inches from mine.
He was staring at me.
But those familiar eyes, usually sharp and cold, were now filled with an almost ethereal softness, like calm water.
It felt surreal.
The scent of soap lingered in the air, wrapping around my senses.
In this confined space, his crisp, clean scent steadily eroded my every sense.

My gaze slowly dropped, only to notice that Fletcher’s neatly buttoned collar had somehow come undone, revealing a patch. of pale skin, with a hint of a well–defined collarbone visible beneath.
He sat there like in countless dreams, composed yet alluring, an almost divine figure of restraint and temptation.
But if this was just a dream, why did his cold. eyes suddenly flash with something more?
Like a disciplined Buddha, suddenly plagued by thoughts that should not exist.
It felt… off.
The night was eerily still, and we stared at each other in silence.

But the dangerous tension in the air spread like mildew after rain, growing unchecked in the depth of my heart, uncontainable.
My chest fluttered, and my breath became heavier.
Reason began to crumble, and in the next. instant, my hand instinctively grasped Fletcher’s tie, pulling him closer.
After all, it was just a dream, wasn’t it?
Breathing unevenly, I heard myself whisper, “Darling…”
In an instant, his hot breath brushed against. my neck, so real that it felt as though this was no dream at all.
I instinctively recoiled, but the cool pressure of his fingers tightened on my shoulder.

His dominance was overwhelming.
Wait… this wasn’t a dream.
I snapped my eyes open. As Fletcher leaned in closer, I swiftly turned my head away.
The moment of flirtation ended.
My heart pounded frantically, as if the rush of blood had slapped me back to my senses.
In a second, I was fully awake.
“Your phone’s ringing.”
I flinched, then noticed something had slipped to the floor. Looking down, I saw Fletcher’s suit jacket.
I pretended not to notice, focusing instead

on the flashing name on my phone.
It was a call from Winston.
“Aren’t you going to answer it?” Fletcher’s voice was casual, his tone indifferent. “It’s been ringing for a while.”
I tightened my grip on the phone, glancing out the window. Only then did I realize that the car had already stopped in front of my building.
I thanked him softly, “Thank you for the ride, Mr. Lynton. Have a good night.”
“No need to thank me. It was on the way”
His voice was low, devoid of any emotion.
If not for the frantic pounding in my chest, I might have wondered if everything that

just happened had been a figment of my imagination.
As I glanced at Fletcher, I saw him open a message with a pink cat icon. With a soft, tender tone, he asked, “Are you asleep yet?”
That icon… I’d seen it in the company group chat. It was Davina.
Only then did I realize that when Fletcher said it was on the way, he really meant it.
His precious one, it seemed, lived just upstairs from me.
I pinched the palm of my hand, silently stepping out of the car.
It was just a dream.
In a moment, my phone buzzed again. I took

a deep breath and answered the call.
Winston’s calm voice, tinged with a rare urgency, came through the speaker. “Lena, are you
wakay?”
I a bit dazed. “I’m fine, what’s wrong?”
“I heard from Sean that you’ve been working late these past few days, and you haven’t responded to messages. So I…”
Sean had been recommended to the studio by Winston.
From Winston’s tone, he sounded worried that I might be overworking myself.
I thought of the messages he had sent earlier and the handbag he had gifted me before. My heart felt mixed with emotion.

It was rare to have someone so considerate of me in Myslana.
So, I suggested, “Are you free tomorrow night? I’d like to invite you to dinner.”
“Ah?”
As soon as the words left my mouth, I felt a little awkward and quickly added, “Another day is fine too.”
“No, tomorrow night, Winston said urgently, “After you finish, text me, and I’ll come pick you up.”
The following afternoon, Winston arrived at the studio as promised.
He was dressed in a white textured crew–neck sweatshirt paired with dark brown casual pants and white sneakers, looking

relaxed yet artistic.
He was also holding a shopping bag.
Seeing me still typing away at code, he effortlessly walked into the break room with a box of blueberries.
I was tidying up my desk, preparing to leave.
Just then, a video call came through. I opened it, and to my surprise, it was Daphne.
Why was she calling me at this hour?
I hesitated for a few seconds, then decided
to answer.
Instantly, Daphne’s anxious tone came through, “Lena, Letch is being foolish. He’s insisting on bringing that Ms. Bates to tonight’s family dinner, and I can’t stop him.”

It was just a family dinner, and Daphne was already losing her composure. If she knew that Fletcher had spent a huge sum of money, five million, to polish Davina’s image, she’d be furious.
And I had to keep this from Daphne for Fletcher.
It was a delicate situation.
I wasn’t sure whether to speak or stay silent.
On the other end of the video call, Daphne was rambling non–stop. “Lena, can you talk some sense into him? After all these years, Letch only listens to you a little.”
I was momentarily speechless.
As I pondered how to respond, Winston

suddenly came over, holding the washed blueberries.
“Lena, try these.”
His long fingers reached towards my lips, startling me into speechlessness.
Then I heard Daphne’s exclamation from the phone, “Lena, is this your new boyfriend?”
Winston’s sharp, well–defined facial features appeared in the video call at that very
moment.
