Chapter 05: New Model
“Letch, isn’t it such a coincidence?” Daphne stammered, “Lena’s back in Myslana and she even got herself a boyfriend.”
Elderly people really know how to hit the nail on the head.
But this topic didn’t seem to interest Fletcher. He merely glanced at his watch and said indifferently, “The auction’s about to start.”
“Oh, right, I almost forgot,” Daphne cheerfully grabbed my hand. “Lena, let me treat you to a meal sometime. Bring your boyfriend along, and I’ll check him out for you.”
It was just a polite remark, which I didn’t take seriously, only giving a perfunctory nod.

But Daphne seemed unsatisfied. She shot Fletcher a look and said, “Why don’t you say
Fletcher sneered. “Are you two close?”

The atmosphere immediately turned frosty.
But Fletcher was right. Without him, I wouldn’t have had any connection with Daphne.
I gave myself an out. “Daphne, Mr. Lynton, I have something to take care of. I’ll take my leave now.”
I’d held that back for a while.
I had already shown the golden goose enough respect, and with that, I calmly left the scene.

In the distance, I vaguely heard Daphne ask, “Why does Lena call you Mr. Lynton?”
There was a hint of probing in her tone.
I rubbed my throbbing temples and quietly walked toward the home appliance section.
Half an hour later, I finally bought the air purifier. The store staff were kind enough to offer free delivery, so I was able to leave with a sense of relief.
As the elevator passed the third–floor food court, a group of people walked toward me, with none other than Winston, the class leader, at the forefront.
He wore a black collared jacket paired with a white T–shirt and dark casual pants. With his silver–rimmed glasses, he gave off a slightly

married vibe.
In fact, after graduating from university, he didn’t go to a big corporation but stayed on as a professor.
If I wasn’t mistaken, the people around him were probably his students. He had always been popular.
Just as I was debating whether to approach him, Winston spotted me.
He quickly stepped into the elevator and smiled, saying, “Lena, what a coincidence.”
The young people with him followed in and stared at me. One of them jokingly remarked, “Professor Fleming, you sure are a lucky guy!”
“Stop joking,” Winston said, his tone polite, then explained, “She’s my classmate,

Charlene Grande. By seniority, she’s actually your senior.”
The young men immediately straightened up and said in unison, “Hello, Ms. Grande.”
I couldn’t help but laugh at their amusing expressions.
When the elevator reached the first floor, the young men hurriedly left, as if they had planned it, and before they disappeared, they reminded me to take care of their Professor Fleming.
Winston had been drinking.
We went to the parking lot together, and I called a ride for him.
Noticing that I hadn’t gotten in the car, Winston asked, “Aren’t you coming along?”

“It’s not on the way” I replied honestly, not wanting to burden him. “I’ve already called a ride.”
Winston sighed lightly, then got out of the car, but this time, he was holding a beige plaid business briefcase.
“I really appreciate your help with the website building last time,” he said, looking at me seriously. “Consider this a token of my thanks.”
It seemed like a coincidence, but the size of the briefcase matched my laptop perfectly. It was well–made, the leather was of high quality, and it was clear it wasn’t cheap.
I declined, saying, “I can’t accept this. I didn’t really do much to help.”

“Is it not to your liking?” Winston’s tone became apologetic. “Looks like I really failed at choosing a gift.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Then take it,” Winston said firmly, unusually insistent. “I was too forward this time. Will you let it slide just this once?”
He then gave me an expression as if he needed to seriously reflect on his actions.
Knowing how hard it was to repay favors, I didn’t want to make it difficult for him and reluctantly nodded.
Winston finally got in the car, but before leaving, he reminded me to text him once! got home.
As I watched the black BMW disappear from

view, I turned to walk toward the subway entrance. But just as I took a few steps, I heard the sharp click of a lighter.
I glanced over in confusion, only to spot. Fletcher standing not far away.
The smoke wafted around him, his face
blurred and indistinct.
I remained silent, continuing forward, but his cold voice reached my ears. “This is the new model you chose?”
Fletcher’s gaze was fixed firmly on my handbag. His eyes were sharp.
I had no idea when Fletcher had appeared, nor why he was scrutinizing a handbag so intently.
A sudden thought flashed in my mind,

reminding me of the question Davina had asked earlier that morning at the studio.
I guessed Fletcher must have assumed I had gotten a new laptop.
The new laptop and the old one–but what difference did it make to him?
Meeting his gaze, I calmly replied, “I don’t think that’s something for investors like your to worry about, is it?”
Fletcher froze for a moment, took a long drag from his cigarette, then angrily extinguished it and turned to leave.
A quick change of expression.

spender. I should have endured a bit longer.
I certainly didn’t want Kaitlyn to return from her business trip to find the company in chaos because of me.
The next morning, I went to work as usual, relieved not to encounter Fletcher downstairs.
However, that relief was short–lived, as it was quickly replaced by a flurry of deliveries.
“Ms. Bates, please sign for your laptop.”
“Ms. Bates, your laptop bag, please sign here.”
“Ms. Bates…”
By the time Davina opened the eighth package, it was filled with allergy

medication.
Aria, the receptionist, who loved to gossip, pointed to the sender’s name and said, “Is it Mr. Lynton again? Oh my gosh, he’s got the looks and he’s willing to spend money! What a perfect boyfriend.”
Davina, surrounded by a mountain of packages, couldn’t hide her joy.
Blushing, she closed the door and began opening the parcels while making a call.
The hallway was so close to the office that I could hear every word of the conversation.
“Fletcher, you bought all this? It must’ve cost a lot, huh?”
“No, no. How about I take you out to dinner?”

Whatever Fletcher said on the other end made Davina laugh and cover her mouth. “Fletcher, you’re teasing me again.”
I looked down at the laptop in front of me, its keyboard worn and the letters gradually fading, and gave a self–deprecating smile.
I spent six years chasing after him, only to receive a prize he didn’t even care for. It could never compare to the carefully chosen gifts he gave to his girlfriend.
After lunch, Sean handed me the code he had completed last night for review. I paused for a moment and then knocked on Davina’s office door.
When I pushed the door open, Davina was fiddling with a new laptop in front of her.
Rose gold, a luxury brand, and even the

lowest configuration would still cost at least ten thousand.
Mr. Lynton truly was financially generous.
Upon seeing me, Davina’s eyes flickered with a hint of embarrassment, and she quickly explained, “Sorry, Charlene, I don’t know how Fletcher ended up sending so many gifts without saying anything. I hope it didn’t disturb anyone.”
“How far have you gotten with the work I gave you yesterday?”
Davina widened her eyes, looking innocent. “Sorry, Charlene, I just finished setting up the new laptop, and I haven’t had a chance to write the code yet.”
As expected.

“Well, can you write a section before the end of the day?”
Davina
Shooked troubled. “I’ll try my best.”
She said she’d try, so I didn’t push, but after returning to my desk, I took over her work.
How should I put it? Although she was from the investment side, she was also part of our tech department. Since she had a title, she couldn’t just have the title without fulfilling the role.
At the very least, she should be able to write basic code.
Otherwise, if this went on for too long, other colleagues might start to feel dissatisfied.
Since she hadn’t finished, it had to fall on
me.

I got busy, and before I knew it, the time had flown by. Glancing at the clock, it was already past 7 PM.
I looked over at Davina’s office, surprised to
she was still there.

She was focused on texting.
As if she had sensed my gaze, Davina stood up, took the laptop, and left her office.
“Charlene, I’ve written a section. Can your take a look?”
Her tone was a little pleading.
It made me feel a bit guilty.
I quickly skimmed through the code and found myself at a loss for words.

Maybe I was being too demanding of her.
Just as I was about to speak, the young woman suddenly blinked back tears and said, “Charlene, am I too stupid?”
Before I could respond, the studio door suddenly swung open without warning. I looked up and saw Fletcher standing at the
entrance.
His gaze immediately fell on Davina’s face. Davina stared at him in surprise, and the next second, she lowered her lashes and gently bit her lip.
Her expression looked… almost pitiful.
