Chapter 8: A Bullet for the Truth
“You ruined my life. You couldn’t accept that Roman chose me over you,” Evelyn sneered, kicking me hard in the stomach. I gasped, blood spilling onto the tiles.
I looked down at my phone, just out of reach. I needed to call for help, but the pain was overwhelming. Then she yanked my hair back.
“You had no choice but to spread your legs for your new ‘husband,‘ didn’t you? To bring down Roman.”
I winced, the spot where she’d hit me throbbing, my mouth full of blood.
“He deserved it, and I’m coming for you next.”
Evelyn’s laughter was manic, and she struck me with her gun. My head slammed against the tile with a painful groan.
“Should I be scared?” she taunted. “Look at you. Pathetic. You can’t even defend yourself, and you think you’ll come for me?”
She paced, ranting. I saw an opening. When she turned her back, I moved, stopping when she glanced over. Groaning, I waited until she looked away again. Then, inching closer, I grabbed my phone. It lit up with an incoming call from Dom. I quickly muted it and hit the record button as I picked the call.
I wanted him to hear everything, but I couldn’t let Evelyn know.
“My children will be without a father,” she muttered, “They froze all of Roman’s assets. I can’t get anything, not a dime.”
She stepped toward me, and I turned my phone so it faced the tile, hiding the ongoing call. “You never loved him, did you? You just used him like he used me. You two are perfect for each other.” I spat.
She crouched down, flipping the gun in her hands. “I did love him, at first. But then I stopped.”
I met her eyes, disgust swirling in my stomach. “So why did you run me over when we were younger if you didn’t love him?”
Her gaze went distant, and she smiled coldly. “Let’s just say I hated losing to another woman. I wanted to kill you, but when I heard you didn’t die but became wombless, I thought it was a fitting punishment.”
“You’re despicable,” I said. “You won’t get away with this.”
She laughed darkly, wiping blood from my lips and licking it. “You didn’t know Roman was. sleeping with me on the side, did you? Want to hear something else?”
She leaned in, whispering with a smile, “None of my three kids belong to Roman. Not even the one inside me. He’s not the father.”
My stomach twisted in revulsion.
“Roman is impotent,” she continued, “I stayed with him just to use him for money.”

My stomach twisted in revulsion.
“Roman is impotent,” she continued, “I stayed with him just to use him for money.”
A sharp pain shot through my stomach, but I stayed quiet. “So why did you push me down the stairs?”
She rubbed her belly, lips curling. “I don’t know. I just hated you. Every time I saw you, I wanted to hurt you. And now, I’ll finally kill you.”
The gun clicked. I shut my eyes, waiting for the end.
Then a gunshot echoed, but I felt no pain. I opened my eyes to find Evelyn on the floor, gasping, blood pouring from her shoulder.
Dom was there, lifting me up. Everything around me felt muffled. The only sound clear to me was Dom’s voice.
“Amanda, can you hear me?” he asked, his voice urgent.
Tears blurred my vision as I looked up at him. One thing was clear, I was irrevocably in love with this man.
As Evelyn prepared to shoot, the pain I felt was the thought that I might never see Dom again. Memories of us, eating ice cream, his gentle kisses, his gaze that made me feel like I was his world, flashed before my eyes.
“I thought I lost you, mi amore,” Dom whispered, holding me tightly against his chest. I placed my hand over his heart, feeling its steady beat. He was here. He was mine.
“I love you, Amanda. I don’t know how it took me this long to realize,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.
