Chapter 5
I returned to the home we had shared for five years and started packing my things.
As I looked at the clothes, shoes and gifts I had once carefully picked out for him, all I could feel was disgust.
I tossed everything into my suitcase–clothes, shoes and every last trace of the past. The photos, the gifts, the memories–I threw them all into the fireplace.
Flames roared to life, devouring everything in seconds. I watched as the things I once treasured turned to ash, but I felt nothing. Just then, the door swung open.
Nicholas walked in, Gwendoline clinging to his arm.
“What the hell are you doing?” His eyes flicked to the fireplace, where the last remnants of our past curled into embers. His brows furrowed.
Without looking up, I tossed in one final item. “Packing. Leaving.”
Gwendoline let out a laugh, tightening her grip on him. “Nico, she’s just putting on a show. Trying to make you feel guilty.“}
Nicholas‘ voice was.cold. “Rose, don’t waste your time. Burning this crap is the only smart thing you’ve ever done. I don’t want anything tying us together anyway.“S
With that, he pulled off the ring I had designed for him and tossed it into the flames.
I barely spared it a glance before letting out a quiet, bitter chuckle. “Relax. I’m not trying to win you back. I just don’t like keeping garbage around.“S
Gwendoline smirked as she sauntered over, arms crossed. “Rose, you can leave–but not before we check your bags. Who knows if you’ve tried to slip something valuable out on your way?”
I met her gaze, unimpressed. “And what gives you the right to go through my things?“}
She let out a laugh, tilting her chin up. “The fact that I’m Nico’s fiancée. And you? You’re just the trash he finally took out.“}]
With that, she kicked my suitcase open. Clothes and toiletries tumbled onto the floor–nothing expensive, nothing of real value.}
For a brief second, Gwendoline hesitated. Then, as if realizing how little there was to mock, she scoffed. “Well, well, is this really all? Guess all that time spent warming his bed didn’t get you much after all.”
Nicholas barely spared the mess a glance, his voice cold. “Just grab your things and go. I don’t want to waste another second on you.” I ignored them both, crouching down to gather my belongings.
Gwendoline knelt beside me, pretending to help–then leaned in, lowering her voice. “Rose, did you know? I’m pregnant. Tomorrow, when the company goes public, I’ll tell Nico the good news. What do you think will he propose to me right then and there?”
I didn’t flinch, didn’t even look at her. Just kept packing. Then, out of nowhere, she stumbled–letting out a sharp cry as she clutched her stomach and collapsed to the floor.
