Chapter 367
“Ahem, Jordan, you’re working from home today, huh? You didn’t go into the office?” Milly tried to strike up a casual conversation, coming off awkwardly.
Seeing Milly wake, Jordan put his pen down, looked up with a cool, serious look, and said, “Oh, you’re up?”
Milly laughed and scooted closer, sitting beside him. “Yep, I’m up.”
Jordan glanced at her but didn’t say anything, returning to focusing on his work. Sitting next to him, Milly started to feel increasingly unsure.
Why is Jordan keeping quiet?
And why hasn’t he asked about what went down?
Hold on, wasn’t Jordan the one who saved me? Maybe that’s why he’s so chill about it. But if it wasn’t Jordan who saved me, who could it have been?
She subtly caught Ivan’s eye, who stood next to Jordan, her gaze asking silently, What’s going on with Jordan?
Ivan swallowed hard. Honestly, I have no clue.
Milly kept asking with her gaze, When did you get here?
Ivan replied with his gaze, I just got here.
As they exchanged looks, a clear voice interrupted, “Milly!”
“Yes!” Startled, Milly quickly straightened up.
Her quick compliance was unnerving.
It wasn’t entirely her fault for seeming so shy, mostly because she had been around Jordan’s stern and aloof nature for too long. His strong aura made her feel a bit on edge.
With yesterday’s events still playing in her mind and having forgotten everything after getting drunk, seeing Jordan like this made her even more unsure.
She now realised why, despite Jordan’s soft looks, he was feared by everyone in the family. Even Stephanie, who was adored by him, trod lightly around him.
When Jordan got severe, it was indeed … daunting!
Despite being visibly upset, Jordan didn’t notice. He suggested, “There’s some digestion-friendly soup in the kitchen. Go help yourself.”
“Okay.”
Uncertain of Jordan’s mood, Milly didn’t want to make him wait. She got a bowl, sat beside him, and quietly sipped her soup, occasionally glancing at him.
But he was unreactive. After watching him silently for thirty minutes and finishing two soup bowls, he hadn’t spoken or shown emotion!
His unemotional front only deepened her suspicion that something had happened yesterday. This behaviour wasn’t typical for Jordan; he was acting unusually distant.
“Ahem! Uh… Jordan, I… I had a weird dream. Do you think it means anything?”
Jordan briefly looked up from signing a document. “Oh? What was your dream about?”
Milly tried to gauge his reaction and shared, “I dreamed I was kidnapped but managed to escape all by myself, and then I woke up feeling so relieved … ”
Jordan raised an eyebrow and mocked, “Is that so? And in your dream, did the kidnappers let their captives have a drink?”
Milly laughed awkwardly, trying to explain, “Hehe, maybe they thought I was too much to handle, but I stayed alert. Look, I wasn’t hurt. I guess…”
Bang! Jordan hit the coffee table before him, making the white jade tabletop wobble.
“Milly Burnett!”
Milly went quiet immediately.
Uh-oh. Jordan looks seriously mad.
This is the first time he’s used her full name; he’s distraught with her now.
Jordan’s rage is unmistakable; his eyes,
which haven’t been seen all night, are bloodshot and even redder like a demon stepping out from the underworld. His voice is frosty.
“Milly, haven’t I told you before that you should let me know about everything? Your main job is to keep safe, especially with so many guys around here. Is there a need for you to step in first?
“You got lucky this time; you came out alive. But what about the next time? Can you be sure you’ll always come back safe? Can you guarantee the kidnappers won’t get to you every time?”
As Jordan spoke, his voice shook.
Seeing that video on the phone, watching Milly being taken by the kidnappers, and hearing her scream for Apollo, he felt like he was suffocating right then and there!
In his thoughts, the image of Milly lying by herself in the cold morgue from his past life kept haunting him. The intense fear and terror almost trapped him in that room!
He might have broken down if not for his unwavering belief that he had to find Milly.
The thought of living without Milly again tormented him. Could he last a year? Six months? A day? Or only an hour or even a mere second?
He still felt a chilling helplessness that sent shivers through him.
Milly knew Jordan was concerned about her and cared for her deeply. She recognised her actions were wrong, regardless of her reasons. It wasn’t right to make her family worry.
And her approach to handling things could’ve been much better.
With a heavy heart, she looked at Jordan and apologised sincerely, “Jordan, I’m sorry. I won’t make such rash decisions again. I won’t make you worry.”
Jordan’s lips were tight, his silence heavy, and though he didn’t speak, the remnants of his irritation were evident.
Her fundamental mistake wasn’t just making him worry; it was her disregard for her life.
Jordan’s mood turned darker as he tossed his pen back on the table. Turning to Ivan, he said, “Alright, you can leave now. Bring these papers to the office; I’ll take care of them tomorrow.”
Ivan nodded eagerly. “Absolutely, Mr. Burnett.”
After organising everything, he left swiftly, worried that any delay might provoke Jordan’s wrath.
Ivan was well aware of how much Jordan valued Milly. This recent kidnapping had Jordan activating all his resources, anxious for his sister’s safety. It was Ivan’s first time witnessing Jordan so infuriated, particularly at his cherished sister.
Now that family matters were to be settled, Ivan had no intention of lingering. He grabbed the documents and scooted off.
