Chapter 225
I didn’t know how long I was out. When I finally woke up, my best friend. Janessa Scott’s voice was the first thing I heard.
She scolded. “Antonio, are you crazy? You made her swim after she had a miscarriage? How could you not know?”
“A miscarriage… When did she get pregnant? Why didn’t she tell me?” Antonio’s voice was rough, filled with regret.
‘Are you blind? Can’t you see how sick she’s been? Or are you too busy ogling Wendy?”
Janessa was seething with anger.
If we weren’t in a hospital, she might have slapped Antonio.
“I didn’t know…” Antonio’s voice was weak.
“You gave the house to Wendy and bought her a car, but you didn’t know about that? How do you think she miscarried? It’s your fault!” Janessa snapped
“I…” Antonio was lost for words.
“Stop it. I can’t stand to look at you. Get out,” I said.
The ward fell silent, and I slowly opened my eyes.
Janessa sat by me, her face worried as she touched my head. “Are you awake” How are you feeling?”
I looked at her. tears filling my eyes. “Did you know everything?”
Janessa tapped my forehead, shaking her head in disappointment.
“You should have listened to me. You shouldn’t have married him. It’s too late now.”
Reflecting on the past made my heart hurt.
If I hadn’t been so lovestruck, my parents would never have let me marry him, no matter how wealthy Antonio’s family was.
During our parents‘ first dinner, I overheard Antonio’s mom on a call in the restroom. “We were ready to give an 80–thousand–dollar dowry, but her family is so cheap and poor, 30 thousand dollars should be more than enough.”
That night, I told Antonio about it.
He said his mom, Judith Cobb, was out of line and promised to make up for the dowry.
But that never happened.
It wasn’t until three years into our marriage, after a few drinks, that Antonio let the truth slip.
“I knew about the dowry. My mom asked me.
“Lila, you’re so gullible. No wonder they say love makes you stupid.”
Now, with a clear head, I could see Antonio for who he really was. He was a hypocrite.
At some point, Antonio walked into the ward, looking at me
He apologized, “I’m sorry, honey. I didn’t know about the miscarriage.
Feeling the coldness of the sea again, I looked at Antonio and interrupted
him coldly. “I know you’re into Wendy. Let’s divorce. You can marry her, and I’ll wish you both the best.”
“I don’t want a divorce.”
Antonio was desperate, trying to explain. “I swear. There’s nothing. between us. I am not into her. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have married you.”
I gave him a cold look and let out a laugh, “Seriously? Antonio, didn’t you tell me you had a thing for Wendy, but just never got the chance?
“You said you’d hate marrying me on a whim, and the second we split, you’d be all over Wendy. Was that all just talk?”
That night, Antonio was wasted, and Wendy was the one who brought him home.
I was sleeping in the guest room, but I could hear every move they made in the living room.
Wendy helped Antonio, who was covered in his own vomit, onto the couch, and then she made to leave.
Antonio clutched her waist, not ready to let go.
I’ve got regrets,” he mumbled. “Why’d I rush into marrying her?”
Wendy glanced my way from the bedroom, a smirk on her face
“So, if you did divorce, who’d you be with?” she asked. grinning.
“You obviously. If I divorced, I’d marry you right away Baby, will you spend the night with me?” pleaded Antonio.
That night, Wendy didn’t stay.
I figured she was tired of dealing with his mess. That was why she
dumped him back on me.
Looking back, I didn’t rush to the living room and confront Wendy because I was disappointed with Antonio.
Later on, my time with Antonio was the final stage of getting over him.
Antonio was kicked out of the ward by Janessa.
But he didn’t give up. Half an hour later, my phone was buzzing like
crazy.
Antonio took me off his blacklist.
He sent me over a dozen messages, all showing concern.
He texted. “I heard that you’ve just had a miscarriage. Chicken soup will do you good. I’ll make some for you later.
“Don’t eat anything cold these days. Keep your tummy warm. I’ve ordered some tonics to help you recover.
“Let’s forget about my mistakes. Can we start over?”
I didn’t reply to Antonio. I put his messages on silent, had the nurse switch me to a VIP ward, and made it clear that I wasn’t to be disturbed.
Antonio kept calling, hoping to see me. I finally answered the phone. annoyed. “Antonio, I don’t want to see you right now. Let’s talk about getting a divorce once I’ve recovered, okay?”
There was a pause, and then Antonio’s gentle voice came through. “Honey. I just want to see you from afar. I won’t bother you.”
To avoid any further entanglement, I hung up and turned off my phone.
Three days later, I packed up and was discharged from the hospital.
Antonio was waiting for me at the hospital entrance. When he saw me, a smile appeared on his face. “Discharged? Let me drive you home.”
I didn’t make a fuss and just got in the car.
As the car started, the Bluetooth speaker came to life, and Wendy’s sweet voice filled the car. “Welcome back, my dear! Work hard and make some dough for me to spend.”
