The moment Lawrence opened his mouth, Nolan had a bad feeling about what was coming.
His face turned even colder, and when he spoke, his voice was sharp enough to slice through glass. “I told you never to bring that up again.”
Lawrence quickly raised his hands in defense.“I swear, it wasn’t me who brought it up. The Holy Lady just happened to deliver the Everlife Vine, and she mentioned it first.”
When Nolan got angry, it was downright terrifying. He turned his head to Ross, who was standing just behind Lawrence, and shot him a piercing look that needed no words.
Ross swallowed hard, clearly rattled by Nolan’s glare, then nodded and said, “She really did mention it first. She came today just to bring you a gift. And it happened to be the Everlife Vine, you know, the one you need the most.”
Honestly, Ross and Lawrence had both been caught off guard. Ross could already guess what Lawrence had been thinking.
Back when Eliza had given Nolan that first rare herb, the century–old Purple Shroom, they had considered asking her about the Everlife Vine.
After all, Lawrence had picked up on its scent coming from the Purple Shroom. He was certain the Holy Lady had some on her. But Nolan had shut that idea down before it ever took root.
So no one expected that when Eliza visited for the first time, the very gift she brought was that elusive Everlife Vine. And it had definitely aged a hundred years.
They had searched high and low for these rare herbs and found nothing. Yet Eliza had already delivered two of the three.
They subconsciously wondered if she also had the last one, the Bloodshade Blossom, or if she at least knew where to find it.
That was what Lawrence had been trying to find out. He just wanted to fish for a few leads. But in hindsight, he realized he had pushed too far, enough to scare Eliza off.
After Ross finished laying it all out, Nolan let out a long breath and rubbed his forehead. His frustration was obvious.
“Did it never cross your mind that the fact she has these rare herbs but has never sold them publicly probably means she doesn’t want anyone knowing about them or even asking where she got them?” Nolan said.
That was exactly why Nolan had warned them not to dig. He had sensed it right from the beginning.
It was not strange for Eliza to have valuable herbs. She carried the blood of both the Stonor and Padilla families. If anything, it would have been odd not to have such treasures in her possession.
But she had never said a word about them. The only reason she offered those herbs was that Nolan had helped her, and she trusted him.
The best way to protect that trust was to leave things be and not ask questions.
But the moment Nolan was away, his ever–loyal subordinates just had to go poking into things they should not. He suddenly felt like he was finished.
“So what now? Maybe I should go apologize to the Holy Lady myself?” Lawrence asked, guilt washing over him now that he realized what he had done.
He never meant to ruin the trust between Eliza and Nolan. He had just gotten carried away in the heat of the moment. Ross looked just as regretful. He had wanted to stop Lawrence, but when he saw that there was only one rare herb left on that list. If Eliza really had it, then Nolan could finally be fully healed.
Ross had gotten excited, too. Neither of them had kept their cool, and now here they were stuck in this awkward mess.
“I’ll go with him,” Ross added. “We don’t even know what the Holy Lady likes, but maybe we can each prepare a gift and go
