I couldn’t be bothered with them anymore.
I arranged to have hotpot with some girlfriends. The warmth inside dispelled the winter chill, and we chatted away.
Suddenly, a phone beeped. Its owner looked at it and said, “Nora, you shouldn’t go back to your hometown for now. I heard a serial killer escaped to your area.”
Cora, my best friend, put down her phone, looking worried.
“Don’t worry. I’m not getting involved in that mess.”
I dismissed it, throwing my favorite tripe into the pot.
“I heard he killed several officials, and the last one was at Heath Manor. The victim’s house was sold as a foreclosure.”
The tripe slipped from my chopsticks, but I didn’t care about the splattering oil.
“I wonder how the buyer would feel if they knew it was a haunted house.”
“Haha, but the price was a steal. If it were me, even if a ghost strangled me in my sleep, I’d praise its strength.”
Everyone laughed, but I couldn’t.”
Because the foreclosure house at Heath Manor was the one my clueless brother bought.
I grabbed Cora’s arm, urgency in my voice.
“How did you know?”
I searched online after Logan bought the foreclosure house but found no information about it. That’s why I was worried..
“My brother told me. Remember, he’s the chief of the criminal investigation unit.”
She glanced at me.
“He usually can’t reveal case details, but he knew I was meeting you today, so he asked me to tell you. Not sure why.”
“He specifically told me?” I thought I should talk to him; there might be more to this.
I added Liam on SnapChat and impatiently sent my questions.
“You know it was my family who bought that house, right? What happened there? Is it dangerous to keep living in it?”
I bombarded him with questions, but he didn’t answer. He just said it was complicated and advised not to stay there for now.
I tried calling Logan, but he kept hanging up. After several attempts, he finally answered.
I heard clattering sounds in the background.
“What do you want? Speak up! My time is precious!”
The mixture of shouting, noise, and clinking bottles made it hard to hear him.
“Are you gambling?” I paused; now wasn’t the time to discuss this.
“It’s nothing. Someone told me you shouldn’t stay in that house. Go back to our parents‘ place.”
“What? Ugh, there you go again. Do you think I won’t get angry?”
I tried to reason with him, but he kept interrupting me, and the call ended in less than a minute.
He’s hopeless, I thought.
Liam finally found some time and invited me to a coffee shop to talk.
I didn’t want to get involved, but curiosity got the better of me.
When I entered, I saw a tall man in a brown hoodie and white cap sitting by the window, deep in thought. He waved me over, and the sunlight on him made me pause for a moment.
