“If I knew you were rich, I wouldn’t have
helped you with the label! You could have
saved so much money!”

“You’re getting me food, drinks, and a
massage tonight!”
I agreed, and Jen spun around in my chair.
“Chelsea stopped all her activities.”
“What happened?”
“The usual. The schedule was too busy, so
she’s exhausted.”
What?
She was healthy and could play video games
with Brad all night!
“Has she released anything new?”
“Just those two songs. She was talking about
a new album but nothing’s been said.”
“Remember that songwriting show we were going for? Chelsea had already recorded an
intro, but she quit after you left.”
Chelsea not releasing new albums or going on
the show made me suspicious.
If I didn’t write songs, couldn’t she?
“Hey, have you thought about being a
songwriter?”
“A songwriter?”
“The whole industry knows you’re talented.
Everybody misses your work!”
I got defensive!
They want me to be a songwriter, so I can
write songs!
Something was wrong.
Jen knows my habits, and that I never regret
my decisions.
Why would she ask me to come back?
Is someone pressuring her?
“Hey, Dad wants to retire. I’m so busy that I
fall asleep on the couch. I don’t have time to
write songs.”
Jen frowned.
“Tell me the truth. Are you here on a
mission?”
“Okay. Here’s the deal.”
“Chad the top musician, is looking for a new
label. He said he’d only sign with someone if
he gets a song written by you. So, my label
had to send me out here.”
“Write a song, so I can go back.”
I decided to write a song.
I have work tomorrow, so Jen flew back
tonight.
I canceled my work and locked myself in my
studio.
I wrote lyrics for four hours.
I sent the song to Jen and went to sleep.
I made sure to create a trap that people will
eventually learn about.
After I woke up, I saw that Jen had called me
ten times and sent several texts.
“Ashley, Chelsea released your song!”
“What’s going on? I sent the demo, and
Chelsea had already recorded it and released
it online!”
I checked Twitter, and saw Chelsea’s name
was trending.
“I feel much better! I’m sorry to have made
you worry. Here’s a song I wrote in the
meantime.”
The new song was the one I wrote for Chad!
Plus, the best melody on the song was the
one I wrote down, not the one I sent to Jen!
Chad, Brad, and Chelsea are working
together.
They’re using this to make me write more
songs!
How did Chelsea know what I was thinking?
I wrote two versions of the song.
The demo I sent to Jen was different than
what I had written on paper.
She must be reading my mind.
That’s why she didn’t release any songs since
I left.
How is that even possible?
Chelsea should have asked me to write a
song with her instead of trying to take credit
for writing them herself.
I lay in bed.
