As she stepped into the building, she glanced up. The design of the intersecting hallways above her head was striking, sophisticated.
Today, however, her goal was the very top of these spiraling corridors.
Eleanor watched the elevator screen, her heart pounding in her chest. screen, her heart pounding in her chest.
The doors opened to a brightly lit hallway. Through the glass walls on either side, she could look down and see the building’s interior, a dizzying view from above.
At the end of the hall was a pair of double wooden doors–plain but imposing, with an air of authority.
The assistant cautiously pushed open the door, and Eleanor’s eyes were met with the sight of a massive, two–story office.
A long row of glass walls offered a sweeping view of the
rounding buildings.
A spiral staircase led upward, presumably to Elijah’s private quarters. Eleanor stood, momentarily stunned by the sheer scale of the This was her first time seeing Elijah’s professional domain.
space.
To the side, Logan, seated at a small conference table, stood immediately as he heard the sound of the door.
“Eleanor, you’re here.”
Eleanor snapped back to reality, handing him a thermal bag. “Logan, I brought you lunch.”
“Still taking care of me like a daughter.”
Logan smiled broadly as he took the bag from her.
Just as he was about to sit down, he noticed that Eleanor still had something in her hand. “What’s this?”
“This is Elijah’s coat. He saw what I was wearing yesterday and thought I was underdressed, so he let me borrow this. Since I was already coming to bring you lunch, I figured I might as well bring it back.”
As she spoke, Eleanor glanced around, but didn’t see Elijah.
Logan, noticing her gaze, said, “Elijah’s upstairs, getting an IV”
Eleanor hesitated for a moment, a strange mix of emotions bubbling inside her.
But her rational side urged her not to waver.
She placed the coat on the couch and, feigning interest in the surroundings, walked toward Elijah’s desk.
The desk was impeccably organized, files neatly arranged, some with annotations on the side.
She searched the desk twice, but couldn’t find the project for Terrell anywhere.

Even the bookshelf was thoroughly checked.
It couldn’t be… Eleanor raised her eyes toward the upper floor.

Meanwhile, Logan had finished his lunch and got up to clean up. He noticed there was still something else in the thermal bag. “Eleanor, are you here to see Elijah?”
Eleanor quickly protested, “No.”
Logan picked up the bag of medication. “Then what’s this?”
Before she could respond, Avery entered with a steaming bowl of oatmeal, briefly pausing when he saw Eleanor.
Logan placed the medication and the oatmeal into Eleanor’s hands. “Go ahead.”
Eleanor, gazing at the hot oatmeal, made a snap decision. She would take a chance and head upstairs to see if she could find the project contract.
“Alright.”
Upstairs, standing at the door to the room, Eleanor felt her palms sweating.
Just as she hesitated, a low voice came from within.
“Come in… Eleanor.”
Upon hearing his voice, she nearly dropped the tray in her hands.
In Elijah’s presence, she felt like a ghost. Could she really challenge him?
But she refused to back down. Even if she failed, she had to try.
Taking a deep breath, Eleanor pushed open the door.
The room was simply decorated, with shades of grey dominating the color scheme.
The floor–to–ceiling windows were softened by white sheer curtains that filtered the harsh sunlight. A gentle, warm light bathed Elijah, making him look almost languid despite the IV still attached to his hand.
There was an unexpected softness to his usually cold, handsome face.
It was mesmerizing.
Elijah lifted his gaze to meet hers, and she realized she had been staring at him for far too long. Feeling caught, she quickly looked away and walked to the side of the bed.
“I brought lunch for Logan and, uh, I also brought your coat. Avery brought food, so I thought I could do you a favor.”
“You think I asked?” Elijah’s voice was low, almost mocking.
Eleanor bit her lip, setting the tray down with force.
Elijah glanced at the contents of the tray, his eyes landing on the pharmacy bag from across town.

“Didn’t visit Jaxen, but you came here to bring me medicine?”
“No.”
Eleanor reached for the bag, but before she could touch it, Elijah snatched it from her hands.
“I’m hungry,” he said, eyeing the oatmeal.
Eleanor held the bowl up. “Here.”
Elijah raised his IV arm slightly.
Eleanor pointed to the spoon at the edge of the bowl. “Either hand works.”
“No strength.” Elijah’s gaze never left Eleanor, as though he didn’t believe she could be so naive.
Eleanor understood exactly what he meant, but she deliberately played dumb.
