When Childhood Bonds Stir Trouble

06
I took a step back and said calmly, “Calvin and I are divorced. Whatever he does has nothing
to do with me.”
She froze. “What did you say? Divorced?!”
“Yes. We split up. His new wife is at home. I’ll take you to see her!”
I led the way enthusiastically, explaining everything that had happened.
“I already told you. There was nothing I could do. I wasn’t in charge. Since we couldn’t make it
work, I divorced him. Now Jennie is his wife. If you have any issues, talk to her.”
Sally was no pushover. As soon as she heard that, she rolled up her sleeves. “That little homewrecker! I’ll deal with her myself!”

A neighbor passing by asked me, “Rebekah, you’ve got family visiting?”
“Not mine. It’s Calvin’s family. Calvin hasn’t sent them any money, and now their parents
can’t even afford to live. She came all this way just to confront him!”
Thanks to my little announcement, the whole camp quickly learned that Calvin had
abandoned his parents after getting married.
People started whispering among themselves. I helpfully guided Sally right to Calvin’s doorstep and pointed inside at Jennie.
“There she is.”
Jennie was holding up a piece of fabric, examining it against herself. Sally, livid, stormed inside and slapped her across the face.
I grabbed a bag of popcorn and sat at the door, eating it while listening to the screams and cries coming from inside. With a smile on my face, I thought, “Looks like there’s a good show to
watch now.”
Before long, Calvin got word and came rushing over. When he saw me, he was furious. “Rebekah, what are you playing at? Why did you bring Sally here?
What’s wrong with you!”
“We’re divorced. She came here on her own. You married a new wife and forgot about your parents, not sending them money. And now you have the audacity to blame me?
Hurry up and go inside. If you’re any later, your wife might not make it out in one piece.” The whole camp heard about the incident. I sat with a few neighbors, enjoying the drama.

By the time Calvin came back out, his face was covered in scratches. Sally followed behind him, making a scene, crying and shouting, utterly humiliating him.
I chuckled and mused, “So, Calvin, how does it feel now? Back when we were together, I scrimped and saved just to keep the household afloat.
But now it is different. It is Jennie’s problem. Let’s see how long she could last.”
Jennie finally emerged, her face bearing a glaring red slap mark, her hair disheveled, her entire appearance a mess. She looked like she had suffered quite a lot.
I shrugged without saying anything, just looking at her with a cold smile.

Life for the two of them in the military compound wasn’t easy. Calvin got chewed out by Wiley for the family drama. Unable to take the pressure, he had to borrow money from his
colleagues to send Sally home on the train.
After that, he had a huge fight with Jennie and stopped giving her his salary. Every month, he now had to send two hundred dollars to his parents.
It was only then that Jennie realized Calvin only looked impressive on the surface. In reality, he was struggling financially. She began to regret her choices.
The sounds of their fights became a regular occurrence. Jennie refused to cook or do laundry, and after a full day of training, Calvin had to come home and do all the housework
himself.
Meanwhile, I kept my house spotless. The vegetable seeds I had planted sprouted into lush greens, enough for us to be self–sufficient.
I even had extra to share with the guys in the camp. My reputation as a capable wife spread throughout the entire military compound.
