Chapter 41: Buying a New Car
The moment I mentioned money, a crack appeared in Fletcher’s composed demeanor, his brows furrowing even deeper.
I feigned casualness and said, “What’s wrong, Mr. Lynton? You’re not willing?”
He lifted his eyelids slightly, his gaze dripping with sarcasm. “Charlene, didn’t you understand? I said it’s not about giving it up. This opportunity…”
“This opportunity is mine, I interrupted, my tone indifferent, having long since abandoned any moral high ground. “Mr. Lynton, think about it. If Ms. Hayes insists on bringing me to the event, what could you possibly do? In the end, if word gets out, it’ll only make people think Davina is causing

trouble, and it might even tarnish the her reputation.”
Fletcher’s eyes narrowed into slits, his displeasure evident. “Charlene, are you threatening me?”
“Me? I wouldn’t dare.” I said with a humble tone, taking a delicate sip of my coffee. “If I’m not mistaken, there’s a section on the internship evaluation in the graduation defense, right? How that’s written is still up to Mr. Lynton, isn’t it?”
At my words, Fletcher seemed to be enveloped in an icy aura. His already cold demeanor became even more imposing, exuding a sense of danger that made the air heavy.
I was scared too, but I knew that a lose–lose situation was the last thing Fletcher wanted

to see.
I was gambling–gambling on Davina’s position in Fletcher’s eyes.
After a long silence, I heard him speak. “How much do you want?”
As expected, he still cared about her.
But although I had won the bet, my chest felt like it was weighed down with bitter medicine, the taste lingering unpleasantly.
I replied flatly, “It’s not our first collaboration, Mr. Lynton. You can decide what’s appropriate.”
With my dignity gone and the chance to meet my idol slipping away, I figured I might as well get some benefit to soothe myself.

Fletcher pulled out his phone, tapping the screen in front of me with reluctance written all over his gestures.
“WhatsApp transfer: 100,000.”
The notification sound snapped me back to reality. In the next second, I noticed the curious stares of people around us.
Not just them, but I too was in disbelief.
One hundred thousand.
For Davina, Fletcher really was willing to spend money.
“Are you satisfied now?” Fletcher scoffed, his tone cold. “You know what to tell Davina, right?”
The joy that money brought vanished

quickly, and I stared at Fletcher, forcing a response. “Of course…”
As soon as I spoke, I realized my voice was trembling.
Watching Fletcher’s figure disappear from my sight, I silently opened my phone and counted the zeros after the one. It felt like a dream.
I should be happy, shouldn’t I?
At least, Kaitlyn wouldn’t be caught in a tough spot, and I could use this opportunity to buy a new car for myself.
I wanted to buy a car.
The winters in Myslana are unbearably cold. With a car to take Miles around, he wouldn’t have to endure the frigid weather or squeeze

into the subway anymore.
When Kaitlyn heard, she beamed with excitement. “See? I told you, now that you’re the manager of our tech department, how can you not even have a car to get around? Wait, I’ll take you to pick one out tomorrow morning.”
I happily agreed.
But what I didn’t expect was that Kaitlyn would lead me straight to a BMW dealership.
Seeing the saleswoman’s expectant gaze, I whispered, “I was only planning to get something around a hundred thousand.”
Kaitlyn frowned, clearly displeased. “What, are you trying to embarrass yourself?”
Before I could respond, she gave the

saleswoman a look and ordered, “Bring that car over. The cinnabar red one.”
I glanced at the price tag–it was over three hundred thousand for the base model.
Kaitlyn practically pushed me into the driver’s seat.
Although the color was a bit eye–catching, the driving experience was fantastic.
Kaitlyn’s face lit up with satisfaction as she said, “The moment I saw it, I knew it was perfect for you. Lena, you’re meant to shine in fiery red.”
I lowered my eyes. “But my wallet doesn’t agree.”
Kaitlyn laughed heartily. “It’s fine. Don’t

I’ll cover the difference. Consider it a

saw Davina, happily walking out of the break
room.
The moment our eyes met, her smug expression disappeared, and she greeted me softly, “Charlene, you’re back.”
“Yeah.”
“I heard from Letch that you won’t be able to attend the gathering tomorrow because of some last–minute business?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, all eyes turned to my face. Kaitlyn, too, instantly looked displeased.
“Yes,” I replied lightly, my tone calm. “So tomorrow, please go in my place and attend with Ms. Hayes.”
With a confirmed reply, Davina immediately

smiled, her tone almost too humble. “Charlene, don’t worry. I’ll make sure to do my best.”
She was quite amusing. Clearly, the
opportunity came from Kaitlyn and Fletcher, yet she came to thank me.
“Wow, Charlene, you’re buying a new car?” Aria, carefree as always, came over and stared at the car keys in my hand. “And it’s a BMW!”
I didn’t pay much attention, but when my gaze swept over Davina, I noticed she was staring intently at the car keys in my hand. Her lips slightly curled down, a fleeting hint of displeasure crossing her face before it quickly vanished.
When I looked back, Davina had returned to her usual expression and smiled at me,

saying, “With Charlene’s income, a BMW isn’t a big deal.”
Her tone was a bit grand, almost flattering
me.
What she didn’t know was that the reason I could afford the down payment was because of her.
This didn’t escape Kaitlyn’s notice.
Later, she called me into her office, her tone sharp. “A mere hundred thousand, and that’s all it took to buy your pride?”
I comforted her, “At least we got some money out of it. Who knows, maybe one day Fletcher will invest more in us.”
Kaitlyn was still upset. “I don’t care. The money for the car comes out of the company

account. If Fletcher dares to object, I’ll have Davina pack up and leave immediately!”
I had to admit, I respected Kaitlyn’s decisiveness.
After work, I called Adeline to ask about driving practice.
She was the first in our class to get her driver’s license and was an expert behind the wheel. Thanks to this skill, she was making quite an impression with her boss.
“Charlene, you came to the right person. I know the spot. Just wait for me.”
True to her word, Adeline arrived at the company building on her Kawasaki 400, riding at top speed.
“Winston’s model, huh?” She eyed my new

weren’t enough spots.
“Charlene, you should’ve said it earlier. Rogers Group and Raven University have a corporate collaboration program. Winston might have extra spots.”
Winston hadn’t mentioned this to me, but I had already asked him for so many favors, I didn’t feel right asking for more.
I was about to refuse, but then I heard Adeline speaking into her phone. “Winston, you’re slacking. Charlene can’t attend the party, and you’re not stepping in to help?”
The call was already connected.
Winston was silent for a moment. “Put Lena on the phone.”
Adeline obediently handed me the phone.
