Chapter 02: To Polish Her
Resume
Before getting out of the car, I learned from Kaitlyn that the opportunity to meet with this big–shot investor was something she had earned with several bottles of wine last night.
When it came to her career, she was always willing to go all in.
In fact, over the past couple of years, I had occasionally seen Fletcher’s name in the financial news–his sharp eye for investments, his undefeated track record. Most notably, the deal he handled six months ago involving a major internet company had sent his reputation soaring through the investment world.

The once–financial prodigy had grown into a capital–world celebrity, which was expected, and entirely reasonable.
That was also one of the reasons he was the
center of attention at the alumni event last night.
In theory, as his former lover, I should have tried to avoid this encounter. But looking at the thick layer of foundation on Kaitlyn’s face, I steeled myself and headed upstairs.
After all, we were just an insignificant indie gaming studio. Fletcher surely wouldn’t have the time to personally meet with us.
And as it turned out, my assumption was correct.
In the conference room, three impeccably dressed executives sat neatly in a row,

patiently listening to Kaitlyn and me present our pitch.
Questions, answers, and the entire process stretched on for two full hours.
One of the executives escorted us
downstairs, and Kaitlyn, as usual, smoothly arranged a dinner with him. I stood off to the side, offering a polite smile.
Suddenly, a sweet, familiar voice called out, “Charlene, is that really you?”
I turned around and immediately saw Fletcher and Davina standing not far away.
Fletcher was dressed in a sharp suit, tailored perfectly to his tall, broad frame. Combined with his flawless profile and well–defined features, he looked so handsome that it was impossible to look away.

Beside him stood Davina, wearing a sky–blue shirt paired with black trousers, youthful yet a touch playful.
If you looked closely, the sapphire cufflinks on Fletcher’s wrist perfectly matched the blue earrings adorning Davina’s ears.
They made a striking pair.
If you ignored the flicker of displeasure that passed through Fletcher’s sharp eyes.
As I got closer, Davina’s curious gaze fell on my face. “Charlene, are you here to talk business?”
Quite sharp.
Kaitlyn, ever the perceptive one, sensed something was off. She took a step forward,

extending her hand to Fletcher and smiled. “Mr. Lynton, I’ve heard so much about you from Lena. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”‘
This was one of Kaitlyn’s usual lines, but today, she was about to be sorely disappointed.
Sure enough, Fletcher merely glanced at her briefly, then turned his eyes toward me, sneering coldly, “Is that so?”
The sarcasm in his tone was unmistakable.
I couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed as I recalled how confidently I’d spoken the night before.
“Charlene, you haven’t eaten, have you?” Davina said warmly. “The food at our company is famous. Why don’t you stay for a

meal before you go?”
That’s when it hit me–Fletcher had already placed Davina in his company.
For a senior still in college, this was a rare and remarkable opportunity.
He was already shielding her like this.
I thought back to the times when I shamelessly visited him at the library, only to be assigned a seat across from him, as if he were afraid I’d ruin his pristine image.
Back then, I had taken pride in that, considering it an honor.
“No, thank you,” I said, trying to regain my composure. “We’ve got something else to do. We’ll take our leave now.”

I gave Kaitlyn a quick glance, only to find her wearing an expression of utter frustration.
Once in the car, Kaitlyn shot me a cold look. “Aren’t you going to explain?”
“He won’t invest in us,” I sighed. “I don’t want you to waste your time.”
Kaitlyn furrowed her brow, hesitated for a moment, then blurted, “Wait a minute, Lena. That jerk ex of yours… is he… Fletcher?”
It seemed I couldn’t hide it any longer.
“Oh no!” Kaitlyn concluded. “What if Fletcher actually looks at our proposal…”
I exchanged a look with Kaitlyn, finally realizing the gravity of the situation.
Because in our dating game, one of the main

characters–the finance genius male lead- was supposed to be a simp, the kind of guy who would try to please the female lead but could never win her over.
The future of our project was looking bleak.
At this point, all I could hope for was that Fletcher would simply toss our proposal in the trash without even glancing at it, sparing us from the humiliation of being dismissed as a nuisance.
With Fletcher’s position in the investment world, if he wanted to, he could indeed make our lives incredibly difficult.
And for us, buried in debt, that would be the final nail in the coffin.
The afternoon passed uneventfully, and by the time evening came, Kaitlyn and I

had regained our composure, deciding to continue seeking other investors.
At nine that evening, I returned home feeling dejected. As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, I spotted someone in the distance.
The hallway was dim, and the man was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. His expression was hidden in the shadows, but the tips of his fingers gleamed with a faint red hue.
It was Fletcher.
The motion sensor lights flickered on, and our gazes met, the air thick with unspoken tension.
The pungent smell of smoke hung in the air.
I looked at him and said politely, “It’s just a

coincidence.”
Fletcher didn’t respond.
An invisible pressure weighed down on me, and I continued, “We’re already looking for other investors, please don’t worry, Mr. Lynton.”
I wasn’t afraid of offending Fletcher, but I had to consider the company.
As expected, after hearing my words, the hostility around Fletcher seemed to lessen slightly.
I didn’t say anything more and reached for the door, but the next second, I heard Fletcher speak, “We can invest in your project.”
My hand faltered, and a strange feeling

passed through me.
It seemed he had already seen the proposal.
But why?
Fletcher didn’t lack for large projects. If he truly wanted to collaborate, he could have easily reached out to Kaitlyn. Why go to the trouble of standing here?
I lowered my eyes, wanting to ask, but unsure how to begin.
I had a feeling there was more to this.
As expected, Fletcher’s voice cut through the silence again, “But I have one condition.”
I had guessed correctly.
Meeting Fletcher’s gaze, I responded politely,

“Please, Mr. Lynton, tell me.”
“Vina needs a project for her graduation design. I want her to be involved in this game.”
So that was it. He wanted to use all our hard work to polish Davina’s resume.
I curled my fingers into a fist, then relaxed them. “I’ll report this to Ms. Hayes tomorrow morning.”
I was a technical partner; I couldn’t refuse Fletcher’s olive branch just because of personal reasons.
And besides, we needed money.
Desperately.
Apparently surprised by my calm response,

Fletcher gave me a brief glance before replying with a single, “Alright.”
When he wore that expression, it usually meant the conversation was over.
I understood the hint, entered the apartment, and didn’t say another word.
Outside, Fletcher’s footsteps gradually faded. I crouched down, burying my face in my knees.
The next morning, I informed Kaitlyn that Lynton Group was willing to invest.
Kaitlyn was stunned, and after a long pause, she finally said, “Even a jerk’s money is still money.”
I couldn’t help but laugh, then mentioned Fletcher’s request. After hearing it, Kaitlyn

patted me on the shoulder and comforted me. “Just think about the 208–square–meter penthouse, and those male models at the club. This money has to be ours.”
I nodded pragmatically. “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”
So, Kaitlyn and I returned to Lynton Group.
This time, the receptionist escorted us to the CEO’s office on the top floor.
Just before we pushed the door open, I vaguely heard the sound of a girl’s clear, bell–like laughter. Looking up, I saw Davina sitting demurely beside Fletcher, laughing freely.
As soon as she saw us enter, she quickly pulled away from Fletcher, blushing as she said, “I’ll step out for a moment.”

“No need,” Fletcher called out to her, his gaze shifting between Kaitlyn and me. “Say hello to your new colleagues.”
“New… new colleagues?” Surprise flashed in her big eyes, quickly replaced by a hint of grievance as she quietly murmured, “Is it because you think I’m foolish, Fletcher?”
“What gave you that idea?” Fletcher replied gently. “Aren’t you worried about your graduation project? Now you’ve got one.”
Davina looked up at him, her face a picture of confusion.
Kaitlyn smoothly extended her hand and said, “Yes, Ms. Bates, welcome to the ‘Love Story‘ family!”
Davina looked at Fletcher with gratitude in

her eyes and said, “Fletcher, you’re so good to me.”
It was clear that this unexpected gesture had deeply touched the young woman.
I was surprised as well.
Thinking back on the past six years, I had also created countless surprises for Fletcher -anniversaries, birthday parties, and more, and I had done so willingly.
Now, he was finally doing the same for someone else.

However, Fletcher’s contradictory actions left me a little puzzled, but with money on the table, these things seemed trivial.
