Chapter 7N
I stared at him with blazing eyes and shouted, “You don’t know anything. Cassandra had already destroyed our family once before this. Are we supposed just to sit back and let her do it again?”
“I vow to you that Ella was taken by Cassandra. If you don’t believe me and think I’m crazy, then go ahead and divorce me right now!”
It was the first time I had ever lashed out like this at Aaron and that made him immediately stunned in disbelief and asked, “What did you just say?”
I knew then I could not hide this matter anymore. After all, my daughter’s safety was the only thing that mattered to me at this time.“] However, I needed him to help me. As a father, he had to fight beside me.
So, I told him the truth. I narrated all that had happened in our past life. I explained to him everything that happened to us after adopting Cassandra.
Aaron sat in silence for a long time. He was completely shaken because of the shock.
“You’re serious? All of that… had actually happened?” he asked.
I nodded, firm and unflinching.
“Why do you think I’ve always been so against Cassandra? Have I ever opposed funding the orphanage before? No. Actually, she’s not a disabled person. It’s an act. She was looking for a wealthy, soft–hearted family to manipulate.”
“She wanted us dead. I bet that she’s not done yet, she’ll come back again. Just wait, if you don’t believe me!“}
As if on cue, as soon I finished saying this, my phone rang. It was the police.
“We reviewed the surveillance footage at the school entrance.” The police said again, “After your daughter got a letter from someone, she suddenly turned around and walked hastily into an alley. There are no cameras in that area and no leads at the scene. You should come to the station and see for yourselves.“}]
Aaron and I locked eyes. We could both see the panic rising behind the other’s gaze. Without a word, we both ran to the police station.
However, when we arrived there, Cassandra was already there. She was sitting calmly in the office as if she had been expecting our arrival for a long time.
The moment she saw us, she burst into tears and said in a sobbing voice, “Auntie! Uncle! Thank God, I found you! You have to help me! That couple, my so–called adoptive parents, are monsters!”
“They took me back this morning and beat me for a whole hour. I only managed to escape while they were asleep. I swear I would’ve died if I hadn’t gotten away!” he added.M
A soft–hearted female officer instantly moved when she saw Cassandra bawling so badly. She stuffed Cassandra’s arms with a bunch of snacks and sweets to comfort her.
My heart turned cold, and from the look on Aaron’s face, I could tell that his last shred of doubt had disappeared. He finally believed my words.
Cassandra was far from the sweet, helpless girl she pretended to be.
The officer on duty, clearly overwhelmed by everything going on, cursed under his breath as he filled out reports.
“Cassandra said none of what that couple told us was true. Looks like they were putting on an act too.” Then he added, “Poor kid ….“}] “Not that the family has just filed a report. They claimed their mentally handicapped son was lost so that the police would hurry to send people to investigate. They acted like we’ve got endless manpower! How come everything is piled up in the same place!“}]
It appeared that Cassandra would do anything to escape her predicament. The mentally handicap son was probably in harm’s way now.“] That family wouldn’t care about finding a runaway adopted daughter, not when their biological, mentally disabled son went missing. As Cassandra sobbed, she took off her coat and revealed vicious scratches on her arms.
I immediately noticed something. There were tiny bits of skin under her fingernails. It was not hard to imagine that she was the one who had caused these wounds. All for the sake of her performance.
No wonder she had killed our entire family in the previous life without blinking.
As I saw how ruthless Cassandra was, my anxiety for Ella skyrocketed. However, I could not voice my suspicions to the police because they might think I was a mad woman.
At least for now, Cassandra was being kept at the station. So she would not be going anywhere anytime soon.
