“Gerrald, I told you
–
who betrays true sincerity should
swallow a thousand needles. Back then, you brushed it off like it was nothing. But look at yourself now. What’s wrong? If she meant nothing to you, then why did you have your assistant call her ‘Madam‘?”
Lucas’s voice was steady, but each word struck like a hammer against Gerrald’s heart.
“I saw Jenny standing outside that day,” Lucas continued. “She heard every word you said, Gerrald. I saw the tears streaming down her face. There’s no way she didn’t hear it. It’s just you–you’ve been lying to yourself, pretending nothing is wrong.”
“Can you imagine how she felt, realizing that her entire marriage was a lie? That the husband she loved so deeply had been in love with someone else all along? That he had killed their children just to please another woman? And now, that very woman stands here, ready to marry you? Do you really think she would stay by your side after learning the truth?”

Lucas let out a breath, his gaze steady. “Gerrald, if you still want to marry Lydia, I won’t stop you. But now that something has happened to Jenny, do you really want to go through with this wedding? Can you really be that heartless?”
Silence fell over the wedding hall. Gerrald’s mind spun chaotically. Thoughts clashed like crashing waves. Yes, if Jenny had only ever been a tool to him, then why did he always refer to her as ‘Madam‘?
His gaze drifted toward the little flower girl standing at the side, innocence written all over her face. And suddenly, he thought of his own children–his and Jenny’s. Five lives, snuffed out before they had a chance to take their first breath. He remembered how Jenny’s eyes had once sparkled with hope every time she carried their child. How that light dimmed with each loss, until there was nothing left but emptiness.
At some point, he had thought–if Jenny were pregnant again, this time he would let the child be born. He liked the way her eyes looked when they were filled with light, like stars shining in the night. He had always believed the woman he wanted to marry was Lydia. So why, standing here now, did he feel none of the happiness he had imagined?
Instead, his mind conjured an image of Jenny in a wedding dress. Not as seductive as Lydia, but ethereal, gentle–like a dream. The words ‘I do‘ sat on

the tip of his tongue, yet he found himself unable to say them.
Lydia tightened her grip on his arm, her voice laced with unease. “Gerrald, don’t overthink this. She’s just trying to escape. She doesn’t want us to get married, so she’s playing tricks.”
She let out a sharp laugh. “For years, you let her eat, drink and live under your roof, but she never knew her place. She’s nothing more than a mistress in the dark, yet she dared to dream of truly becoming Mrs. Raymond? Ridiculous.”
Lydia’s voice turned cruel. “She was just your plaything, Gerrald. Now that I’m back, she’s worthless. And now, she sends you an abortion certificate as if you’d actually care? That woman is pathetic.”
Gerrald stared at her, a strange feeling settling in his chest. Once, he had adored her arrogance. But now, hearing her speak with such contempt, it grated against him like nails on glass. Jenny had longed to be a mother. There was no way she would have gotten rid of the baby so easily. And then, something clicked in his mind.
The date on the abortion certificate. His eyes darkened. Without warning, he grabbed Lydia by the throat, his fingers tightening around her delicate neck. “That day at the hotel–what did you say to her?” His voice was low, dangerous.
Lydia’s eyes widened in shock. She clawed at his grip, trying to remain composed. “Gerrald, what are you talking about? I didn’t do anything! She was the one who got jealous and attacked me! You saw it yourself!”
Gerrald’s grip didn’t loosen. “You had a fight with her and the very next day, she had an abortion. What. Did. You. Say?”
For the first time, Lydia felt fear.
“Gerrald!” she gasped. “Are you seriously doubting me over that woman? She’s nothing but a parasite! She’s been leeching off of you for years, clinging to you like a disease! Of course, she wants to get rid of every obstacle in her way! Don’t let her fool you!”
Gerrald’s expression was unreadable. But deep inside, something had
shifted.
For the first time, he was truly afraid. Afraid that he had made a mistake he could never undo.
