After that, my life seemed to settle back into a routine.
I spent my days shuttling between the office, the kindergarten, and home.
The only change was that I had quit my job as a maid at Lesly’s house.
Then Alistair’s father shattered the calm.
A colleague informed me that a man was looking for me downstairs.
When I went down, I saw Alistair’s father, Hanson Byrd, reeking of alcohol, wandering around the company building.

“Eleanore! Lend me some money!”
There were other people from the company around.
“Let’s talk outside,” I insisted, hoping to
get him away from there.
But he refused to budge.
“You’d better be smart about this, Eleanore. If you don’t give me money today, I’ll come to your office every day! I’ll make a scene at Alistair’s school! I’ll make you ashamed to show your face!”
“Hanson, stop this! I don’t have any money!”

I shouted back, “That’s for Alistair’s medical expenses!”
“You borrowed a million dollars from your wealthy boyfriend’s mother to treat your sister, didn’t you? Go ask her again! Just sleep with him a few more times, and you’ll get it!”

Ignoring my protests, Randell lifted me into his arms.

“Did you leave me to pay for your sister’s medical treatment?”
I stayed silent.
“Is Alistair your sister’s child?”
I still didn’t answer.
“Eleanore, say something!”
I weakly responded, “Yes.”
Randell deliberately pressed harder on the wound, causing me to gasp in pain.
