The flammability of gasoline was notorious, and with the slightest spark, it ignited with a whoosh.
Flames licked around the perimeter of the grave, snaking up like tongues of fire and encircling Thalassa completely. The heat scorched her face; it was searing and terrifying. Thalassa thrashed violently in panic. She was desperately trying to break the ropes that bound her, but Debby had tied them too tightly.
No matter how much she struggled, she couldn’t break free.
“I’m out of here. You’re on your own,” Debby’s voice cut through the ring of fire, its words barely audible over the roar of the flames to Thalassa’s ears.
Thalassa was beyond reason. Her mind was filled with the sounds of roaring flames and mounting panic.
She fought against her restraints with all her might, but the ropes wouldn’t budge.
Debby, with her flashlight in hand, walked away, climbed into her car, and glanced back at the fiery circle. She stepped on the gas and drove off into the night.
The blazing circle illuminated the graveyard. The place was as bright as day.
Through the flames, Thalassa saw the many headstones, and beyond them were the ominous woods, where monsters seemed ready to emerge and tear her apart.
Huge terror enveloped Thalassa. On one side was the pitch-black distance; on the other, the fire so close it could consume her at any moment.
Her primal instinct to survive made her struggle ceaselessly. The phone slipped out of her pocket due to her thrashing.
The phone rang, and Thalassa looked down through her tears to see that it was Lysander calling. Desperate, she tried to reach the phone, but it was on the ground, far from her bound hands and feet.
The phone screen glowed persistently, with “Lysander” flashing over and over, as she frantically tried to slide the answer button. But she couldn’t, and eventually, the ringing stopped and the screen went dark.
Her hope was extinguished and her mind was plunged into despair and darkness.
With blurry eyes, Thalassa looked up to see the grass within the circle catching fire, creeping closer and closer.
It wouldn’t be long before the flames reached her. And with the gasoline soaked into her clothes, it would only take a spark to consume her completely.

Shivering in terror, she curled up, trying to distance herself from the spreading flames, but they showed no sign of stopping.
Fear and despair thickened with each passing moment.
Her breath trembled, and her tears flowed freely.
So would she lose her life here?
No, she couldn’t die here. She was pregnant, with children at home who needed her, and
had a mother to look after.
But the grass was ablaze at her feet now; just a little further and the gasoline would ignite. Thalassa pulled back her feet in terror, trying to keep the flames at bay.
But the fire crept closer, consuming her hope bit by bit.
Biting her lip and closing her eyes, Thalassa trembled with grief, bracing herself for the pain of being devoured by the flames at any moment.
Suddenly, the screech of tires on asphalt pierced the night, signaling a vehicle coming to a swift halt. The urgency of the sound suggested someone was coming fast.
This sound jolted Thalassa from her despair. Her eyes snapped open, and she screamed at the top of her lungs, “Help! Somebody, please help me!”
Was someone passing by?
Clinging to this sliver of hope, she yelled with all the strength she had left.
As she cried out, a figure dashed toward her. It was swift as lightning as it leaped over the fiery grave markers and into the blaze.
