She couldn’t forget the icy, piercing glare he gave her when he heard from Amelia about the consumed box of birth control pills found at Central Ring Villa. His anger was palpable, and his forceful grip on her chin felt as if her jaw might snap, disregarding the child growing inside her.
Yes, she had deliberately kept her meeting with Callum from him, and she had lied about the pills, but her reasons were her own.
His hasty conclusion, without any investigation, that the child wasn’t his left her feeling utterly betrayed and disappointed.
Lysander’s deep-set eyes caught the indifference in hers, and it felt like his heart was being squeezed. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he asked in a low, magnetic voice, “You’ve been at work all day. Are you feeling alright?”
Thalassa averted her gaze, her voice neutral. “I’m fine, really. You needn’t worry. I’ve been through childbirth before; I know how to take care of myself and protect my child better than anyone.”
Today wasn’t just about work; it also included a scuffle with Susan, from which she emerged victorious. She had been careful to shield her belly during the fight, so she knew there was no cause for concern.
Hearing Thalassa’s detached words, as if she were severing ties with him, Lysander’s gaze deepened. “Aren’t you curious how I found out?”

Thalassa snapped back to reality, looking at him. “With all the talent you have at your disposal, it would have been easy for you to investigate my meeting with Callum, wouldn’t

She had never doubted that he would seek out the truth, nor had she panicked; she had nothing to feel guilty about.
“I may have a team, but they’re no match for our four-year-old son,” Lysander said.
“What?” Thalassa was taken aback, blinking in astonishment at Lysander. “You had Atticus help you investigate?”
“When you took the kids and ran, didn’t you also have him erase the surveillance footage of your escape?” Lysander’s intense gaze challenged her.

Atticus was part of their escape; he was one of their own.
“So, you’ve never really considered me one of your own?” Lysander’s probing eyes held
hers.
Caught off guard, Thalassa met his gaze and read the serious question in the depths of his eyes. She offered a wry smile, “Haven’t you always held all the cards?”
