Hertha had no clue about the whirlwind of events that had blown through Thalassa’s life recently. She just couldn’t wrap her head around it.
Callum had only known Thalassa for a short while, so why on earth would he willingly whisk Thalassa and her whole brood away from Starhaven?
If it wasn’t for love, what else could drive a man to such reckless lengths for a woman?
“It wasn’t an elopement, I told you,” Thalassa sighed, shaking her head at Hertha’s insatiable appetite for romantic gossip, which apparently knew no bounds.
“Then what was it?” Hertha’s eyes, round and eager, stared at Thalassa, waiting expectantly.
Despite her probing, Thalassa hadn’t given a straight answer.
“It was me who asked Callum to help me escape from Lysander,” Thalassa finally admitted, knowing full well that Hertha’s tenacious nature wouldn’t let the matter rest until she had an answer.
“You wanted to escape Lysander? But why?” Hertha gasped in surprise.
Why, indeed?
Because he had driven Leopold to his demise, his cruelty was unyielding, never once
considering her feelings.
Beside him, she felt like a puppet without thoughts, subjected to his every whim. He never knew the pain she suffered, the humiliation she endured.
She yearned for a life unchained, simple, and free.
The thought of the real reason clenched her heart in pain. The desire to flee the conflict, to live in peace, was her vain hope-a hope constantly crushed by Lysander’s controlling grip.
Thalassa’s hand, resting on the bed, clenched slightly as she faced Hertha’s expectant gaze. She opted for the most relatable excuse, “An unfruitful affair is better ended sooner rather than later. I don’t want to waste my youth.”
Hertha’s eyes flickered, her curiosity morphing into sympathy. She understood Thalassa-what woman would want to stay with a man who would never commit to her?
It wasn’t just a drain on the spirit, but also a waste of precious time.
Hertha reached out, stroking Thalassa’s head with a comforting touch, as one might soothe a little kitten. With an affectation of worldly wisdom, she said, “Ah, I get it, you’ve suffered enough. If only I could bear the pain for you.”

Thalassa was at a loss for words.
Are you consoling me, or are you taking a dig at me?
Letting out a sigh, Hertha pressed on, “But what about Callum? Why would he agree to take you with him? Is he secretly pining for you?”
That was the million-dollar question. After all, Callum and Thalassa weren’t close, and he had no reason to risk offending Lysander by helping her flee.
Unless he was smitten with Thalassa, indifferent to her brood of four with another on the way, determined to take her away to a new life!
To go through such lengths for her, his feelings must be deep indeed.
Thalassa lightly tapped Hertha’s head, saying, “Can’t your mind wander to more serious matters?”
Hertha pouted, rubbing her head, then shook Thalassa’s arm, coaxing, “Come on, spill it. I really can’t fathom his motives, and I bet I’m not the only one.”
Hertha’s question reminded Thalassa that her frequent, almost fated encounters with Callum, coupled with her efforts to disguise the turmoil caused by Bruce’s actions, could easily lead to misinterpretation.
Not just Lysander, but even Hertha could misconstrue the nature of her relationship with
Callum.
“He’s helping me because of Leopold,” Thalassa confided in Hertha, her best friend, whom she could tell anything.
“Leopold?” Hertha exclaimed in shock.
